1998 Jeep Wrangler Owner Ratings & Reviews

1998 Jeep Wrangler -
I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ with over 130,000 miles. I like to do anything outdoors, and this is such a great capable vehicle. I have driven on and off road, and she has never let me down. My Jeep has a hardtop that when on has kept everything dry inside. The Jeep is built like a tank. I have not had any motor or transmission issues taking off road. I have driven on sand on the NC coast. I have been down trails in VA and through the mud pulling out friends near my home. The motor has plenty of power and has only needed to be maintained for general routine service. The interior has been a dream to maintain. The dash being exposed to the sun has no cracks, The seats and carpet still look good, even with the occasional rain shower without the top on. The paint is still shiny and new. T... (more)
Story
One of my favorite things to do was to just drive down to NC and ride on the beach. We would swim and surf and just enjoy the sun in your face and the wind in your hair.
Pros
Jeep Wranglers are easy to drive. They are stable and reliable. They have everything you need and nothing more. You can wear a suit or a tank top and board shorts and you will always fit in.
Cons
The ride isn't the smoothest, the inside isn't the quietest and you don't have a ton of space.
1998 Jeep Wrangler - A great first car
This is my first and current vehicle. It is almost perfect for the state I live in (MI). In the summer, you can take the top off and go to the beach for a ton of fun. In the winter, its small size and four-wheel drive make it a blast to drive. I do have some concerns about the safety of it, but overall, it is quite impressive for its size and price. There is some rattling at 140-thousand miles as well as a sticky clutch (automatic). A few rust spots have just popped up this year, which is impressive for Michigan. OEM parts are expensive, but there is a plentiful secondhand market and many aftermarket parts producers. When you hit the gas, this thing goes fast! It has an inline six in a tiny body, which makes for a ton of torque. The gas mileage leaves a lot to be desired, but in the wi... (more)
Story
I remember when I was in high school. It was summer, and I just got my license and my Jeep. I took off the top and doors for the first time. Going to the beach with a couple friends were some of the best times of my life. Mostly because of all the attention from the girls!
Pros
Lots of "cool" factor in the summer, especially with the top and doors off at the beach. Great control in the winter snow. Feels good to drive with high engine torque. It also not only held, but increased in value as it was bought used.
Cons
It is not very safe in a crash. In fact, a highway crash would be sudden death. Also, the gas mileage is quite poor, less than 12 mpg at times. While the engine may last another 100k miles, the transmission is almost dead.
