1990 Jeep Cherokee - My first Jeep
I purchased this bad boy three weeks ago, and I've never been happier with a vehicle. I drive my step kids across the state of Oregon every other week and bought this so I could safely navigate the mountain passes and snow this winter; the total miles per month is around 3,000!
Story
My parents had multiple Jeeps when I was growing up and always swore by them for reliability. Three days ago - after they purchased a different model - they called me from the Oregon coast...needing a tow! The four-wheel drive pulled the tiny car out of the ditch without even trying. I made a joke about how they should consider a Jeep.
Pros
So with that many miles per month, comfort was obviously an important factor. The interior is stock fabric, which doesn't get cold like leather - plus the Mopar sound system rocks! Most importantly though is the 4.0 inline-six engine. It's one of the strongest internal combustion engines ever made, which makes me feel safe taking my kids across the state.
Cons
In a word: Fuel. This thing drinks gasoline almost as fast as I am able to fill up the tank. This is the unfortunate trade off for having a powerful motor with a huge amount of torque. Also, the four-wheel drive is extremely difficult to shift in and out of. At first I thought this was an issue with the Jeep, but it turns out that it's just a issue with all Jeep XJs made in the early 1990s and would cost a few hundred dollars to replace with aftermarket parts.
1999 Jeep Cherokee - Good Jeep.
I have had this Jeep since it was new on a lot 18 years ago, great SUV. Runs great and very reliable, has over 125k on it. It has only four cylinders but gets great gas mileage. It is very low maintenance and is safe for families. I would buy this jeep again.
Story
Going camping and to Crater Lake. It did a great job getting the family safely to where we were going.
Pros
The gas mileage in this Jeep SUV is amazing. I get almost 25 mpg in town. Also, easy to take care of and drive. Has lots of room to put your stuff when going on trips, and it is safe for the entire family. Awesome in the snow with the four-wheel drive. This is a stick shift model, and I enjoy driving it around. It is very fun to drive.
Cons
It only has four cylinders, so it does not have much power. You can't really pull anything behind this Jeep. The backseat is great for kids, but for adults, it is a little bit snug when going on long trips. Not much power going up steep hills, however the mpg more than makes up for it.
