2001 Jeep Cherokee Owner Ratings & Reviews

2001 Jeep Cherokee - Old but tough.
I had never owned a Jeep before I purchased this Cherokee from my daughter's boyfriend. We lived in New Jersey and were moving to Arizona and we thought it would be fun to have an off road vehicle to drive in the desert. It has been lifted 4 1/2", which I felt would help me as a new driver negotiate off road obstacles. We brought it to Arizona and took it out for a drive in the desert. I was amazed at what this vehicle could drive over! Rocks, downed trees, through washes, you name it. I found out what articulation is! It performed like an animal! As I got more adept at driving it, I attempted more difficult terrain. It never let me down, I never got stuck in the sand. I even felt confident enough to begin taking it out in the desert without any Jeeping friends to help me out if I got ... (more)
Story
My wife and I were in the Jeep and attempted a trail in Sedona called the Cliffhanger Trail. I was still a new driver and my wife was not at all confident in the vehicle's ability or mine! There was one part of the shelf road trail which involved a fairly steep and rocky descent, with substantial rocks to drop down from. I made it down fairly well, but that was the easy part! On the way up, th... (more)
Pros
My most favorite positive is the fact that it is a 4-door 4 wheel drive. Wranglers, etc. only had 2 doors. Our adult kids come out to visit from the east coast and we sometimes pick them up with the Jeep and go off-roading. I like the fact that this vehicle is a beast - it takes a pounding off road over rocks and holds together fine. Back seats can fold down for cargo space. It also gets covered inside and outside with fine red rock dust, but the electrical system etc. never gets clogged up. Just change the vent filter once in a while and it's fine. I put all-terrain tires on it which help... (more)
Cons
I don't like the high profile and the narrow wheel base of the vehicle which makes easier to roll over. The overall length of the vehicle is short, so getting into the back seat is difficult. There is very little room for storage behind the back seat. It's fairly noisy inside while driving down the highway. There is no handlebar in front of the passenger's seat to hold on to while off-roading. The top layer of paint is now peeling and the Jeep looks like it has sunburn. Gets terrible gas mileage.
2001 Jeep Cherokee - Keep Cherokee is a solid performer at almost 16 years old.
I have owned my Jeep Cherokee for almost ten years now. I bought it from a friend who took admittedly took good care of it since he bought it new in 2000. This has been one of the most consistently strong vehicles I have ever owned. This Jeep has never had any major engine issues. The body still looks nice, with no rust or other bad spots. The gas mileage is still the same now as it was when it was new. The four-wheel drive is still great, and I drive this car daily on my work commute. I have been so impressed with this Jeep Cherokee that when the time does come to trade it in, I’ll definitely get another Jeep!
Story
One particularly memorable story about my Jeep is that it actually helped me pull down a dead tree. I had a tree in my front yard that was in danger of falling on my home, so I hooked a chain to the tree, attached the chain to the hitch on my Jeep, and I was able to guide the direction it fall so disposal would be easier and safer.
Pros
My favorite thing about the Jeep is the four-wheel drive. I live in an area that occasionally gets snow and ice, and it is easy to turn on while driving. It still gives me great traction. I’ve never had any problems driving in bad weather with this vehicle. The engine is solid. I’ve never experienced a major malfunction with the engine or transmission. It also has a decent amount of storage space in the back, and I love that the back seat will lay down to give me even more storage room if I need it.
Cons
The first con about this Jeep is that it doesn’t have a lot of leg room. I suspect this is probably more of an issue of the car being from the year 2000, but I’ll also readily admit that I am quite tall. The hood latch did become a bit sticky on me recently, but some lubricant fixed that problem.
