This car has been going strong for almost 20 years. The body is compact and sturdy with no significant structural degradation over that time period. I feel safe knowing that the metal bumpers would protect me in the event of an accident. The interior detailing is classic and has also held up well over the years. I have experienced no issues with the powerful speakers or main electrical components. The windows are all powered; their motors tend to wear out but are easily replaced. My favorite thing about this vehicle is the ample cargo space when the back seat is folded down!
Story
We take our dogs to Grass Lake from time to time. The larger lab mix sleeps across the back seat on the way. The smaller terrier mix likes to sit on one of our laps in the front seat, sometimes resting his front paws on the center console.
Pros
This vehicle is compact and maneuverable, able to fit into spaces others could not. In flood situations it is able to wade through high waters. The many, large windows improve safety by allowing a clear view of your surroundings. There is a huge amount of cargo space when the back seat is folded down. The stock speakers and powerful and sound great for an SUV. The metal bumpers would be sure to hold up in the event of an accident. Gas mileage is surprisingly good for a Jeep.
Cons
As an older vehicle, it is not compatible with modern add-on products such as Automatic. It includes a stock cassette player though this is easily replaced with a more modern stereo system. Though the gas mileage is good for an SUV, it is much less than a more modern vehicle. It takes 6 rather than 5 quarts of oil, so oil changes are slightly more expensive than standard. As with most other vehicles there has been wear and tear to various components over the years (e.g. muffler, gas tank straps) necessitating their replacement. Cab is slightly small for a larger person.

This car is listed as one of the ten cars that will never die. It is on that list for a reason. This is the second Cherokee I have owned. It is the only vehicle that I have ever purchased two of. The first one I purchased brand new, and this one was purchased second hand. First of all the visibility is the best of any vehicle I have ever owned. You don't feel like you are sitting down in a bucket. It is nimble, and it can be parked into the tightest spaces, as you have full awareness of the exterior body. I am a petite person, and the proportions of this jeep allow me to put items on the roof myself. The flat roof is ideal for carrying items, such as kayaks. The engine is bullet proof... Period. Easy to work on, parts and parts are cheap. I have the 5 speed manual transmission. When co... (more)
Story
I live on a dirt lane outside of Boston Massachusetts. One winter that lane was snowbound by a major snow fall, causing my neighbors and I to be stranded. My Cherokee was the only vehicle that could pass through. I was able to use it to pull a downed tree limb and get my neighbors out. Go Jeep!
Pros
Visibility Cargo area maneuverability Off-road capability Ground clearance Dependability
Cons
Rocker panels Harsh ride Electrical switches do tend to have problems Front end can develop problems
