The trooper was a very good vehicle. Especially for the time I needed it. The cargo space and accessibility of that space were a major selling point for me originally. Ample room for five people and pretty much an entire month's worth of groceries. Solid craftsmanship on the vehicle itself. Wonderful MPG and mostly a low maintance SUV. But once one thing in the car goes bad it starts a cascade of a bunch of other little things.
Story
We usually have pretty bad snow storms around winter time here. And when I originally bought the trooper alot of crossover hybrid suv's were coming out. The '94 trooper has 4 wheel drive but its not full time 4 wheel drive. One night we has horrible snowfall. In the morning while i was switching on the 4wheel drive all of these soccer moms go flying thru the subdivision in their hybrids smirki... (more)
Pros
The cargo space on the Trooper is phenomenal. We've used it multiple time to cart five people and all the luggage associated with them to out of state conventions. It's extremely comfortable for all of us, even on multi-hour drives. The SUV handles like a dream usually and is roomy enough that you don't feel crammed into the drivers seat.
Cons
It seemed that it was never just one thing that went bad at a time on the vehicle. And when one thing went out it was usually quickly followed by another and another. Like first the power steering pump would go, then the timing belt a day later, then the radiator. You'd get everything fixed in one go at a mechanic and everything's fine for about sixe months... then it would happen again with a different part.

1999 Isuzu Trooper - Workhorse of a vehicle, comfortable ride, reliable SUV, and lots of cargo room.

I love driving this vehicle. It doesn't ride like a "truck" like a lot of SUVs. Tons of head room and cargo space, reliable, goes just about anywhere (and I've taken it places I probably shouldn't have!). Not great on gas mileage but not too terrible. It's been really great overall and has required very little mechanical work except standard maintenance.
Story
Driving it up into the mountains for camping trips has been awesome! It has been great to get into areas that are a little more remote without worrying that I'm going to high ground on something. Strong enough to pull a small trailer, making it easy to pull things.
Pros
Lots of head room -- more than most cars/trucks/SUVs. Nice wide-wheel base, so you don't worry about rolling the vehicle on turns. Durable. Big cargo area -- nice and square-ish so you can fit lots of "stuff" and doesn't taper in too much at the top. Comfortable seats for long distances. Higher off the ground and large windows making very few blind spots and good visibility. No longer made, so all parts have to be "found" in junkyards etc. -- meaning cheaper repair parts costs.
Cons
Below average gas mileage (Averages about 12-14 MPG in town). No convenient storage compartments for jumper cables, jacks, etc. Door seals leak air (seems to be a common problem) making it for a noisier ride. Hood lever cable easily overstretched -- it makes it hard to get the hood open at times. Have to upgrade stereo etc. to be compatible with smart phones and hands-free driving. No longer made, so all parts have to be "found" in junkyards etc. -- limited stock and no new parts with warranties.

2018 Isuzu Trooper - Plain and very utilitarian.

I have owned this truck since new and am still have not had any issues besides normal wear items like brakes, wiper, tires and shocks. My wife gets a different car each year and it amazes me that this old Trooper just keeps kicking without a hitch. Excellent power to weight ratio. I'll probably buy something new this year and keep the Trooper just because it is so reliable.
Story
Had my first kiss with my girlfriend in the Isuzu.
Pros
Once you own an Isuzu Trooper, no other SUV will do. This car can hold anything except a 4X8 sheet of plywood (tie on roof rack instead) and can go anywhere. It is comfortable to drive, great visibility all the way around - no blind spots. The engine has enough power to zoom into the fastest highway traffic or amble on the softest sand. This is my third Trooper and I will definitely buy a fourth.
Cons
Crappy gas mileage, front seats have minimal legroom. I'm only 5'11" and have the seat all the way back.
