1996 Honda Accord - Great Car That Lasts
The 1996 Honda Accord DX is a great economical car that holds up over time. I have passed 200,000 miles and it is still running great. It rarely breaks down even though it would be considered old to some people, and the engine and transmission have absolutely no issues. There have been several things I've had to repair over the years, but overall the car's major components have held up well with only normal maintenance required.
Most all of the repairs have been easy enough to do myself, and I learned a great deal working on this car. It has plenty of power for a four door sedan, and plenty of room. The backseat folds down and creates extra trunk space if necessary.
Even after all this time, I still get 28 mpg consistently. The car can be upgraded to look much more sporty. Although ... (more)
Story
When I lived out of my car, I kept a semi-truck battery in my back floor board and connected it to my main battery with a set of jumper cables. I then connected an inverter to the rear battery so I could charge my laptop and run my other devices like fans to keep cool overnight without killing my starting battery. Everytime I got pulled over the police would question me about the strange wires... (more)
Pros
Easy to work on
Easy to drive
Comfortable seating
4 doors
Great gas mileage for the year
Many aftermarket body kits
Responsive and sporty drive
Cons
Changing the fuel filter is ridiculously over-complicated, I even bought the correct tools and still couldn't put the new one back on. I had to take off the master cylinder, and eventually just left it hanging in place
If you have to change the oil pan, there is a bar underneath you have to remove that makes the job a royal pain.
1996 Honda Accord - Built to last
My Honda Accord is 19 years old and it is still running like the day it came off the assembly line. It's got about 114,000 miles on it and I've heard from other owners of this same car that it can easily go up to 200,000 miles. I really like the body shape and style. For a car built in the 90s, it still looks very sharp and current. The inside of it is like a cockpit and has everything right at your disposal. Even though it's so old, it's got all electric windows and locks, plus rear window defrost. It also gets great gas mileage and I rarely have to put money into it.
Story
The most memorable story I have while driving my car is driving through a very bad winter storm. The roads were terrible and it was blizzard conditions and we were driving cross country to get from New Hampshire to Iowa. It was very hard to stop and very hard to get traction and having so many gears on my car probably saved my life in these terrible conditions.
Pros
One of the best features of the vehicle is that it's got so many different gears. It's got D1, D2, and 1 and 2. This really helps in the winter when you're trying to get traction on the snow and ice and it's saved me more than once. I also like the fact that it's gone 19 years and there is no rust on the exterior of the car at all. I still see other cars of the same model as mine on the road today so these cars were built to last. I have put very little money into this car and it's all been worth it for the long time I've owned it. I intend to own it until it completely fails and is not re... (more)
Cons
The thing that I wish the car had was things that are more up to date in newer vehicles like rear camera, GPS, and other modern conveniences. But since it was built in 96, none of those features were available then. Also the car is only a 4 cylinder so it doesn't have a lot of acceleration when you're trying to get onto the freeway, for example. I really don't have a lot of negative things to say about it, it's been such a great car. One other thing about it that I don't like is that in order to lock it, you have to manually lock it with a key instead of being able to lock it with the elec... (more)
