2002 Ford Windstar - An Excellent Family Vehicle
I bought my 2002 Ford Windstar van used. It had 150,000 miles on it, and in the two years I have owned it, I put another 45,000 miles on it. For the first year, I used the van to deliver pizzas, and I drove it quite a bit. The van has never needed any major repairs. I've had to keep on the oil changes and replace the tires twice and brakes three times. I Also needed to replace the gaskets on the intake manifold in order to get the van to pass inspection this year, because apparently this model of vehicle has a common problem with the gaskets wearing out, allowing the system to become too lean (too much air is allowed to enter the air/fuel mix going to the engine). Other than this relatively minor and fairly inexpensive job, I've had no complaints about the performance of the van. As fo... (more)
Story
My wife and I took our two children and four nephews to the lake about an hour from our house. We filled a large cooler with beach items like ice, soda and chips, plus hot dogs and hamburgers for grilling. Then we stacked in lots of towels, three beach blankets, beach toys, sunscreens and sandals, and we all piled in. We used all three rows of seats and the eight of us rode comfortably. We had... Pros
My favorite features were the roomy interior. Even the front seats had a spacious amount of headroom. The brakes and headlights are very accessible and this easy to replace when necessary. The van handles very well without needing alignments. Also, my gas mileage is great. Even when carrying a lot of extra weight ad doing stop-and-start driving in the city, I get an impressive number of miles per gallon. There are plenty of ashtrays and cupholders. The back seats all come out to allow extra room for transporting large items. I've been able to move a King size mattress inside the van with t... (more)
Cons
There weren't many negative things about the vehicle. I don't have any major complaints. The biggest problem I've had so far was an issue with the gaskets in the intake manifold. I did some research online and found that Ford Windstars commonly experience this problem. The gaskets had weakened and were allowing too much air to get into the air/ fuel mixture, causing the engine light to come on with a "system too lean" code. Also, one of the taillights somehow got water trapped inside it. I am having a hard time keeping the water out of it. I drain the water out but it keeps filling up when... (more)
2002 Ford Windstar - Excellent Passenger Van
This is a very comfortable vehicle. Room for seven passengers total with no cramped legs or arms stuck in your sides! Large cargo space in the rear provides plenty of room for luggage, sports equipment, or groceries.
Gives a comfortable and smooth ride. Exceptionally low gas mileage for a larger vehicle. High quality audio components give that stereo sound your kids will love!! There is literally nothing I don't like about this van!
Story
One day at work, several of my coworkers wanted to go out to eat. I volunteered to drive since there were seven of us and I could carry seven people. I had taken my kids to the county fair the previous weekend and had not had a chance to have the van cleaned since that outing. Once all of my coworkers were in the van and we were driving to lunch, someone in the very back seat spoke up and said... (more)
Pros
Roomy. Good gas mileage. Large storage space. Great stereo sound.
Cons
No negatives in my opinion.
1995 Ford Windstar - Ford Windstar wheelchair conversion.
This minivan was converted for wheelchair use by dropping the floor from in front of the rear seat to the firewall by 10 inches and adding a ramp to the side door. It accommodated the conversion better than other vans I have had in the past, since I said higher in my wheelchair of them the driver does in their seat, I still have enough headroom which was a problem before.
Story
Some lifelong friends and I would get together every so often and go to airshows or car shows, everyone could get in my van whereas it wasn't possible in their pickups.
Pros
The build quality (not including the conversion) is very good, nothing has rattled loose. All of the dials and switches are within easy reach of both the driver and the passenger, the rear seat also has a few controls within reach. The air conditioner works very well even on the hottest and humid of Minnesota days, the heater also works well on the coldest days of winter. There is a large glove box as well as built-in pockets in the drivers and passenger doors and a large pocket on the driver side in the middle of the van. The rear windows swing out by pressing some switches which can help... (more)
Cons
There was a recall notice that the hood skin could do laminate while you were driving which could have led to a disastrous accident. I took the van to a Ford dealer and they fixed the problem, but it still was an annoyance having to give up the vehicle for a day, but better than the potential disaster. I do more city than the highway driving and the fuel mileage isn't the greatest. My fuel gauge also died on me within a couple of years of owning it, since it requires draining the fuel tank, removing the fuel tank to replace the fuel sensor and putting it all back together, I didn't want to...
