I like that the Ford Taurus is a step above the Ford escort. It's an automatic, which is always good. I have over 100,000 miles on it and it is still going despite the occasional hick-up. Overall, it's a decent car for what I paid for it and it's still running despite some problems with the heater and some internal noises. It has only overheated once but I managed to fix it. It rides a little rough but it has plenty of trunk space and room for passengers.
Story
I've taken this car on many long and adventurous road trips all across the Southern states. It's been booted, towed, had tires blown on a bridge over the ocean, and been in plenty of memorable moments.
Pros
Has a decent amount of horsepower and torque which is good for long rides on the interstate. Economical car that isn't going to break the bank. I got mine from a police auction. Drivers seat is ergonomic and comfortable. There is plenty of leg room for everyone and a good size trunk space. Overall, it's a reliable car.
Cons
In the city it is a little long and hard to parallel park. It also doesn't get the best of gas mileage but that's ok compared to the price. I frequently have a problem with the car making noises and not giving me the full amount of power when I have the AC running. This can also make starting the car a little hard. This problem is corrected when I turn off the AC temporarily. Once the car gets going up to speed the AC is not a problem. However, this can present a danger when trying to accelerate on ramps to the highway. The check engine light frequently goes on and has been on for quite s... (more)

2005 Ford Taurus - Enjoyable to drive. Not always easy to maintain.

The 2005 Ford Taurus SE is a pretty decent vehicle to own; however, there are aspects about the car that make me "on the fence" about the car. The gas mileage is not great as compared to newer cars; however, you do get a lot more room inside the passenger space and the trunk. I get 24 mpg (6 cyl) on average (highway\city). My perspective comes from the that of a new "shade tree mechanic" (aka DIY'r). Some of the basic maintenance tasks are very difficult to do because of the design of the vehicle. For example, changing the spark plugs on the firewall side is very difficult because of the layout of the engine compartment. The engine is in sideways, so 3 spark plugs are on the front, and the other three on the back. Another example is the need to disassemble part of the plastic co... (more)
Story
I had a very good time in the Taurus in the mountains. The car did very well making it up to elevation (Appalachian Mountains) without loosing much power nor guzzling gas too horribly. Driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway was very fun because the car was able to take the curbs comfortably. The views were great. There is decent visibility out the side windows.
Pros
Smooth and stable driving vehicle. There are a lot of other Taurus owners active on blogs, so maintenance advice is not that far away. The Taurus has been around for so long that it is easy to get parts for the car. Most of the models have been very similar over the years; a lot of tips for one model year will work for other model years. Front-wheel drive.
Cons
It is not easy to change the oil filter because of the position of the filter, and the other parts located around the filter. The v6 engine is in sideways, so half the cylinders are not easy to access. The cabin air filter is not easy to change. The gas mileage is not great. There have been some problems with the transmissions.
