1987 Ford Ranger - A great little truck.

I have a 1987 Ford Ranger with the diesel engine. These trucks are apparently pretty rare, and it might be a bit harder to find parts for but so far I haven't had any problems. I like having the cargo capacity of a truck and the gas mileage of a car. I bought this truck and then went on a road trip to California from Washington and back. The truck did fine the whole way. It's a stick shift, and it shifts amazingly easily. The bed is also designed with groves that will hold 2x6 planks to support a queen size mattress. I haven't used that feature yet, but it sounds like an awesome idea for car camping. The truck also has a spare tire, which not all vehicles have these days. I won't buy a vehicle without one.
Story
I live about a mile away from the nearest paved road, and the gravel roads can get bad some times. So far the truck hasn't had any problems making it through the pot holes. It can also get pretty far out in the woods for camping, which it's great for.
Pros
It takes diesel, which is currently cheaper than gas. The miles per gallon is about 28, which is better than most cars I've owned. The body is solid and steel, I don't like plastic on my vehicles. It has a seven-foot bed with a canopy, so it's great for hauling things. The truck bed is fairly low so it's easy to get things in and out. The under carriage is solid and not rusting out.
Cons
The interior is a bit beat up, and the seat is made of pleather which is doing the old seat split. This could be easily fixed with a seat cover. Not much power going up hills, but it gets there eventually. The exhaust is a bit smelly but you get used to it. The inside of the cab is pretty dark at night. I would like more light around the shifter.

1998 Ford Ranger - Best. Truck. Ever.

The Ford Ranger is a solid light truck. I am especially pleased by it's versatility and high MPG. It doesn't weigh much and it isn't a 4WD, so it is a decent and versatile commuter and around-town hauling vehicle. It also has good clearance, so I've enjoyed taking it up and down fire roads where I was surprised by how well the suspension held up. The transmission is very well built and I haven't developed any clutch problems over time, which is surprising. I tend to drive it like Lemans when I'm not hauling something and it corners surprisingly well. I would also note that the Ranger isn't an oil hog. I don't take the best care of vehicles and the Ranger doesn't seem to mind. It's well put together, low maintenance, and extremely versatile. It's a really remarkable vehicle. Best truck ... (more)
Story
I don't think that I'm done having fun yet and I'm fond of my stranded stories... I felt really grateful to be able to drive up fire roads in Kittitas. A sedan just can't go from asphalt to basalt well.
Pros
Versatile. High clearance. Low fuel consumption. Low maintenance.
Cons
Being rear wheel drive means that I need to plan ahead for snow. Without a counterweight in the bed, it's nearly undrivable in snow. A rare occurrence in the Puget Sound, but still - it was annoying compared to previous vehicles. Also, changing a tile on a truck can be a dicey business. I got this truck used and it had no jack. That's made for some occasional fun times.
