Every adolescent who successfully manages the transition to adulthood is, at some point, faced with a version of the same choice: Is it better to be a polymath or a specialist? To have a liberal-arts education or a deep understanding of the mating habits of the Eastern tent caterpillar? If the Ford Fusion were a college student, it would graduate in eight years with two majors and three unfinished minors. It’s available with six engines; two can be equipped with all-wheel drive, two are hybrids, and one makes 325 horsepower. Then there are the five trim levels, covering the range from bare bones to near luxury. And of course, there are its segment-defining good looks. There’s none of the focused excellence that we enjoy from competitors such as the Honda Accord, the Chevrolet Volt, and... (more)
Story
With six available engines and 11 trim levels, it can be a dizzying task to configure a Fusion. We’d eliminate the hybrid variants, which sacrifice too much trunk space and performance, and skip over the Platinum and Sport models; their charms are outweighed by Audi-adjacent prices. An SE model with the optional 245-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is a happy middle ground betwee... (more)
Pros
Engine and transmission. Fuel economy. Performance and driving impressions. Interior. Infotainment. Cargo space and storage. Exterior. Safety and driver assistance. Warranty.
Cons
Hybrid models fail to inspire, can be very pricey, competitors are more refined.

2018 Ford Fusion - This car is a well rounded fun to drive sedan with a light feeling agile package and a potent 2.0t engine and 10 speed transmission that works well and produces strong acceleration.

Engine power from the 2.0 T is adequate and runs on regular gas, average MPG so far is around 31MPG. Nice ride from the suspension and soaks up the bumps nicely. Good electronics and driver assist functions. Very smooth shifting 10 speed transmission. Good sight lines around the car. Car has a very low driving position and getting in and out of the car is compromised. Because of the lowered stance of the car it feels to low compared to most other vehicles on the road and hinders forward views.
Story
After 3 months, I can still say I look forward to every drive. I'd leased 5 previous Accord EX-L V6 models. While I miss the sound of that fabulous engine, the 2.0 Turbo is absolutely outstanding. With the 10 speed, I've been getting 29 mpg in mixed driving, 35-37 on highway cruising. When pressed, it is at least as fast as my very fast previous Accords. The 10 speed seems excellent.
Pros
Turbo engines are both powerful and fuel-efficient.
Cons
Low seating position slightly hampers entry and exit.
