The car's name says it all. It's whatever you need it to be that day. Its large size allows you to be 'the guy with the big car' but it's relatively small engine and CVT let you save a ton of money on gas. 20 city, 30 highway is a big pair of numbers for a car that seats six full-grown humans and holds enough of their stuff to go on a long trip. The folding front seat means you can fit a full-length ladder or super long pieces of wood into the car no problem, great if you're a do it yourselfer. The car is reasonably comfortable and has a good number of features standard. Performance is perfectly acceptable for what it is. It's not going to blow the doors off of anything but you're not going to think "Wow, this could use another 50 horsepower" Every time you step on the gas.
Story
A long drive from NJ to Richmond that went super smoothly and didn't require constant stops for gas. We made it there in five hours and had a great time the whole way.
Pros
The fuel economy is fantastic for the segment. We are just now getting SUVs this big with similar fuel economy, almost 15 years later, and those come with major compromises over the Freestyle. It's very quiet on the highway, so if you're the kind that likes long road trips, and you aren't in a hurry, you could get 600 miles out of a tank of gas and be comfortable the whole way. Two cup holders per seat!
Cons
No Aux Jack standard. No Bluetooth standard. Standard speakers were lousy. Towing capacity is relatively low. None of these are deal breakers, and all but one of them is pretty easy to solve.

This car has been a very reliable vehicle. I have liked how it has performed in both city driving and on the highway. I have a rather large family (4 kids) and it has fit us very comfortably on some long trips. The driver's seat is comfortable and firm. The console area is not too bulky as I'm a fairly broad-shouldered person. The trunk area is just the right size for us to store 6 medium-sized suitcases when we travel. The back seats fold down pretty easily when we need to haul some larger things.
Story
I've driven the kids to see Christmas decorations in this car. Invariably, at lease one of the kids falls asleep when we go.
Pros
The dashboard has everything I like: it's simple with not too many dials. I drive on hills a fair amount and the transmission (in "Drive") does not allow the car to "take off" when going down a hill. I like this as I like to stay within the speed limit. It's easy to attach child seats to the installed seats. I've had to change out one headlight bulb and it was very easy to do this. In a previous model, my wife was rear-ended but the car provided excellent protection. The the car was a total loss, there were no serious injuries. The indicators are about as loud as I need them to be.
Cons
The CD player and the DVD player are a bit touchy. One of the seats does not fold down easily when we need extra cargo area. Like many Fords, the engine isn't the quietest. The engine isn't loud but it isn't as quiet as, say, some Toyota models I've seen. The cup holders are a little narrow for my cups that I bring in the car.
