2004 Ford Focus - Ford Focus - Dependable after all these years
The Ford Focus (2004) in ZX3 trim is, by far, one of the most rock-solid automobiles that I have ever owned, and this is coming from someone who has owned more than his share of vehicles, from my old beater 1982 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, through various Asian imports (including multiple Altimas). And I always make an effort to pick rental cars that I have never driven before. In short, I have a fair share of experience driving all manner of makes and models of non-luxury automobiles, and this variety of the Ford Focus is up their with the best! A big part of the Focus hatchback experience is the surprising acceleration from the 2.2 liter engine, which has shocked the drivers of BMW M3s with it get-up-and-go. And the feeling that you get cornering in this version of the Focus hatchbac... (more)
Pros
Fun, speed, dependability
Cons
It won't last forever, right?
2001 Ford Focus - Dependable Ford Focus
I have owned this silver, 4 door Ford Focus sedan for over 10 years. I love the mileage that this car gets. The gas tank is on the smaller side which can be a plus when gas costs rise. One of the features I love the most is the sizable trunk. From the outside it looks like it would be tiny, but the trunk is fairly deep and extends to the back seats. For all the miles/daily wear & tear this car has been through it has been sturdy and reliable. I have driven this car over 100,000 miles and have had to replace the engine, radiator, fuel pump and oil pressure gauge within the last 25,000 miles.
Story
While teaching my daughter to drive in a empty parking lot she rounded a corner too fast and we ended up going over a curb planter and coming face to face with a small tree. Luckily she stopped just short of taking out the tree. No one was hurt and we only had a small crack in the front fender and a blown out tire. Needless to say practice was over. She tried to convince me the tree came out o... (more)
Pros
This car was driven hard over 75,000 miles before any large mechanical issues arose. This is more than I can say for some of my previous vehicles.
I love that it has a large trunk. It doesn't look like much, but once you open the trunk it is fairly deep and extends all the way to the back seat.
Cons
The main negative about the car is that once one thing breaks (e.g. radiator) everything seems to follow.
