After owning trucks and a crossover, I decided to downsize to a car with better mpg. I fell in love with the look of the Focus in grey, and chose the hatchback for a more interesting look. In spite of going from a V6 to a small four cylinder, I have not missed the bigger engine once. The Focus is smooth, gets good mpg, has enough space for myself and two kids and is a pleasure to drive. I have had no mechanical issues with it in the over two years of ownership. Still have original brakes and tire wear has been even. The controls are easy to see and reach. Sync system is easy to use. Going from large vehicles to a compact made me worry about feeling like I'm in a sardine can. That has not been an issue at all. I don't feel like I'm riding on the ground and, in spite of it's small size,... (more)
Story
I made it to work in our biggest snow storm last year. This little thing just plowed through the snow (no special snow tires) when people with SUVs were sitting on the side of the road.
Pros
Safety during collision. Good mpg. Smooth ride. Sync functions. Cargo area in hatchback. Although some have had transmission problems, mine has not and is very smooth.
Cons
Seats stain easily (but clean easily). Headroom is lacking for a tall person, however, I got a moon roof, so that's to be expected. Back seat legroom is lacking.

2005 Ford Focus - Low cost, low quality.

I bought this Ford Focus wagon thinking it would be a good car for my teenage drivers. The functionality of the roof rack and split folding seats were ideal for carting around snowboards, lacrosse sticks and the variety of athletic gear we carry. The good gas mileage was also attractive. While the features are helpful, the styling does not appeal to teens or my spouse so I ended up driving it. The car feels low cost. There is nothing about this car that feels luxurious. You feel the road, the car vibrates, and there is a tremendous amount of road noise.
Story
My children are personally embarrassed by this car. They refuse to drive it and are embarrassed to have me pick them up in it. Can't really be avoided though when it's the main car I drive!
Pros
The roof rack, hatch, split rear folding seats and room in the back are all very handy. My teenage son was in a wheelchair for a while, and the rear of the car held the wheelchair with room to spare. The cup holders, door pockets and compartment between the seats provided good storage. Loved the gas mileage and the ability to easily see out the front, side and rear of the vehicle. It's also easy to handle and has a great turning radius.
Cons
Overall, this car just feels cheap. The doors are thin, there is a lot of road noise, and the finishes wore quickly. The leather seats cracked. The car also vibrates and shakes at highway speeds and requires good tires and alignment. This car is absolutely terrible in snow or poor road conditions. No traction whatsoever.
