2006 Ford Focus - It's a solid car, but it's an American car that breaks down in cold winters.
It was fine until you get higher in miles. When you got to about 140 thousand miles, everything started breaking at once. The breaks went out, the cv joints had to be replaced, and 2 of the wheel bearings had to be replaced. I'd rather buy something Japanese and reliable and live with that.
Story
One time at my friends house we took the car off-road. Although it isn't an off-road car, it was still a very fun experience. It didn't handle very well, but that was never the point.
Pros
I had to really think to find a pro about this car. There is a nice travel pocket under steering wheel and light controls where you can store various things.
Cons
It's a Ford. The engineers in America make very interesting yet inefficient designs that just end up being a pain. The slide bolts on the calipers for example. They are hex bolts. And the caliper bolts? Metric. Why confuse everything and just use a simple line of bolts?
2012 Ford Focus - Great-sized car for a bigger city!
Overall, for the cost of the car, I am very pleased. It has just enough room in the back seat for a six-foot tall guy to sit comfortably. The trunk is much deeper than you would think for the size of the car, but the car is still small enough to be able to parallel park on a busy street.
Story
I felt comfortable driving the car for three hours on the expressway in the middle of a blizzard in Michigan to get back home for classes the next morning! It was the weekend I got the car!
Pros
The gas mileage is excellent. I moved across state for college, and my family lives three hours away. The 12.4-gallon tank, on full, will take me back to visit my family, do some mild driving while I'm home, and back to my apartment in the city, almost 400 miles, and just be hitting the line for it to be empty when I park back in my driveway.
Cons
With it sitting low to the ground, I often feel that I don't have the greatest view. Also, the base model of the 2012 Ford Focus does not have cruise control but still has the buttons to change the speed once cruise is set.
