2012 Ford Focus - Why getting a base model Ford is like getting a 15 year old car
The car feels zippy at first but then quickly loses the luster as you realize that a 2012 base model Ford Focus may as well have driven out of the 1990s. You can tell Ford wanted to spend as little money as possible on these base models. The back seat has a laughable amount of room for a second passenger to sit in. No one is able to sit in the rear seats if there is a passenger or a driver. The only saving grace of the car is that it gets really good gas mileage on the highway.
Story
Driving the car out the Las Vegas for a weekend trip. The trip was a 12-hour drive straight through from Colorado to Las Vegas. The good gas mileage on the car made the trip very cheap.
Pros
The car does get good gas mileage. I normally get about 35 miles per gallon when I am mostly taking highways. This is a better gas mileage then most cars that I see on the road.
Cons
There are crank windows in the back. In the year 2012 this is completely unacceptable. My car is a manual, and the transmission feels like it was an after thought for the car and Ford never thought anyone would buy one. The radio and center dash are not a great layout, and the stock radio that came with the car isn't great but can not be replaced. There is next to no room in the back seats of the car. They are really only good for storing things or having a pet sit behind you. There is no world in which there is enough room for a third person to sit comfortably in the back.
2001 Ford Focus - Everything I need
The Corolla is a pretty sweet car, and even the older models like mine have good features and handle well. My car still gets excellent gas mileage and has had very few technical issues. I've driven it from one side of the country to the other, and it functioned without a hitch. Some of the cheaper plastic parts don't last very long, like the drink holders or door handles, but those are easily fixed.
Story
Drove it from Florida to California and back. Lived out of the trunk. It was awesome.
Pros
The top pro about this car is definitely the quality of the engine and chassis. I've not had to make any major repairs on it in the ten years that I've had it. It still gets great gas mileage. I really like it's compact size as well, since it's easier to squeeze into tight parking spaces.
Cons
The top negative things about this car aren't really that bad. Some of the cheaper plastic parts have broken and been replaced, and the weather stripping around the doors came unglued. It is very light, so it doesn't necessarily handle well in icy conditions. Lastly, I wish I could carry five people instead of just four, but I guess the trunk space makes up for it.
