I live in the desert and must have a 4 wheel drive to get home on many days each year. I thought this was a good vehicle for in town driving and 4 wheeling to get home. It has turned out to be a very good vehicle. I drive to a neighboring town most weekends and put many miles on it. It gets good mileage and is comfortable. I have found that the automatic 4 wheel drive is nice. On muddy rain days where I have a 50\50 chance of getting stuck in the mud, the car switches to 4 wheel drive according to what traction I need. That comes in very handy so I don't lose traction having to stop switch into neutral and then go in to 4 wheel drive. It holds lots of stuff and has plenty of room for the grand kids. It has taken a beating and is still going strong. I am well pleased with this vehicle. ... (more)
Story
First night I bought the car, it was raining. the first time I got off the gravel road. before my driveway was graveled I got stuck in the mud due to low power. I was fit to be tied! But after driving it for a good 2 years it has been capable of getting me most places out in the desert I need to go. Only been stuck 2 time. And that is pretty awesome because I have had many opportunities to be ... (more)
Pros
It switches automatically into 4 wheel drive to give you the traction needed in the mud or snow. Holds lot of luggage or tots much stuff. Gets good mileage for gas. Looks nice and is comfortable to drive on trips.
Cons
There is a piece on the back gate/hatch that is broken and broke on this model a lot. Not so good looking that way and the part is only for looks and is almost $100 for part plus labor to put on. The vehicle doesn't have the power of a Jeep and at times that is an issue. Have had to learn how to make it through on the dirt roads in bad weather with it. Just doesn't have the power.

1993 Ford Explorer - The best purchase I could make at the time.

I like that the color is blue, my favorite. It has a big enough bed for me to haul most things I need to, mostly such as fishing equipment and occasionally furniture. It has had some problems. Being an old truck, it has needed some parts replaced: tires, a new heater cord, water pump, tires, etc. It's nothing terribly expensive, considering the price I bought it for. It runs great for the most part. The heat and A/C work, and it gets me where I need to go. However, the clutch has been having an issue that it won't shift smoothly. It was rebuilt but still not working so the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced.
Story
Going to the mountains with it was fun. To get to my house there, I have to drive across a creek. I wasn't sure if it would make it but took the chance and made it.
Pros
The pros are, like I said, that it's my favorite color. The exterior is a little rough, with some scratches, but there are no noticeable dents. The interior is beautiful, a little dirty when I got it but it cleaned right up. There are no scratches or cigarette burns on the seats or anything. It's almost like new in this aspect. It can go fast, and driving fast is an important aspect of my life. Any problems it has had, I have been able to fix within a day, so it's not too time consuming. It handles rough terrain pretty well despite not having 4wd. I like the manual windows, and it'... (more)
Cons
The downside of this truck is that I have had to work on it since I bought it and replace quite a few parts. The clutch was rebuilt, but it still isn't shifting smoothly, so the transmission will need to be fixed. It has almost overheated a couple of times. There are three matching rims and one different rim, so I have to get a replacement set so they all match nicely. It doesn't have 4wd, which is almost a necessity for me because I often go to places in the mountains or around creeks and other terrain that is otherwise difficult to get through without it. Another con is that there i... (more)
