The Ford Explorer is one of the most versatile vehicles on the road. It performs well in 4x4 conditions and can take you anywhere from the ski resort to a snowy backcountry trailhead. The Explorer is narrower than most SUVs, making it easier to drive and park in the city as well. In 1999, the Explorer was rated for 18mpg city and 23mpg highway; this is impressive given the age of the vehicle.
Story
One of the most fun things I've done with my Explorer was going on a road trip in California. I made a bed in the back and essentially turned the rig into an RV, camping out in parking lots as I travelled.
Pros
The Explorer has plenty of cargo space. The length of the cargo area makes it is easy to lie down and sleep in the back. I am just under 6 feet tall and I fit with no issues. The automatic 4x4 makes driving backroads safer, as it will kick in as soon as the wheels start to slip. Routine maintenance such as oil changes and brake replacement is easy with an Explorer; being an older vehicle, the systems are not complicated enough to be confusing!
Cons
As the Explorer ages, rattles become worse and worse. It's not the highest quality vehicle on the road. With routine maintenance, it's possible to keep the ride smooth, but it will not be a Cadillac. Mechanical issues become more common around 130,000+ miles.

It is a good SUV. It has no problem with different terrain, the 4wd works great, and it gets good mileage with the v6. It is spacious inside for all passengers and good room in the back for storage. The interior is simple but operates great. I have been a mechanic for ten years. I have worked on tons of these, but they're easy to repair and have quality chassis and suspension parts. Mine has 200,000 miles on it with original engine and transmission.
Story
This SUV took on some snowy rough roads in the mountains to go shooting. After switching to 4WD, it did fine and went through some big bumps.
Pros
It is good for off-road driving and good storage space. It handles heavy loads fine. Nice leather seats. Heated seats in the front. Selectable 4wd or 2wd. Moonroof. Good mileage with the v6 engine and still plenty of power.
Cons
No third-row seating in these models can be annoying. The v6 engine is sometimes gutless. These are known for having many transmission problems and early years had engine problems. Mine has been fine.
