1999 Ford Explorer - Still running
I like that it is still running great and it is 16 years old. I love that it's got plenty of power. It does great driving. I like that it sets up higher for me to see out. I really needed it this past winter. Even though it's not a 4x4, I was able to get over the ice and snow pretty good. This is my backup vehicle for when I have inclement weather and recreational activities, or if I have to haul dirty pets.
Story
I get to lay the back seats down and make a couch/bed in the back with a bunch of pillows to go to the drive-in movies. And driving over icy roads like I don't care. Best thing ever!
Pros
This thing is in great condition. The exterior and interior have held up, even with me owning it the past 2 years. I have large tires on it, and even when I make a sharper turn, I don't get any rubbing. This vehicle is not a v8, but it is powerful. It is close to 170,000 miles, and it still runs and drives like a newer car. AC still works. All I have had to do is basic upkeep, so a few hoses have been replaced, belts, seals, just regular stuff for being so old.
Cons
I have the 2 door sport. I love the look, but 2 doors doesn't always cut it. It does have seats that fold down, and when I do this, there is a LOT of room in the back. So it's kind of a give and take situation. Parts for it are getting expensive. And gas mileage is not what you want with prices so high.
2002 Ford Explorer - I love my truck.
I drive a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT with a V8. It's a get up and go kind of truck, has leather interior, was in great condition when I got it three years ago. It's heavy on the gas consumption but cruises, and at 245k miles, it still has many to go. It has third-row seating with both the second and third rows droppable.
Story
I have fun almost every time I drive. Having a V8, pedal to the metal, zoom.
Pros
The engine is heavy duty, sounds so excellent. I change my oil often and with the good stuff because I baby it with 245k miles. I drive it almost daily because I deliver for Amazon in it. I haven't needed much maintenance on it, other than routine, and what isn't routine will be in the cons. The cons are tiny and don't make a difference.
Cons
Top negative are even hard to be negative, since it's so old. The transmission has a solenoid pack that we've replaced twice. It's an easy enough fix but still a kicker because once it goes, it's gone. There is also an issue with the seat belt and air bags; the signal doesn't reach all the time that someone is sitting in a seat so the air bags won't become active. Also, the windshield wiper switch--we can't figure out why, but it will only go in top speed. We even replaced it and it didn't do any good.
