2015 Ford Explorer - Great all purpose SUV
My Ford Explorer XLT is black, 4WD and leather seating. I love how the SUV handles in winter weather; it gives me a sense that my family is safe when travelling through snow, etc. It seats 7 and we can comfortably fit two car seats along with grandma and grandpa for road trips. I am not a fan of the gas mileage or the size of the gas tank. Also, the black interior turns into an inferno on a hot summer day.
Story
I enjoy driving it through the snow, it handles great!
Pros
-Handles great in snow, rain, etc.
-Comfortable leather seats.
-Can fit up to 7 adults with room for luggage.
-Great sound system.
-Good touchscreen interface.
-Fewer maintenance trips (about once every 10,000 miles)
Cons
-Only gets about 18.5 miles to the gallon on average.
-Gas tank is small to average size resulting in frequent fill-up trips.
-The back two seats are difficult to get to. You either have to flip the center seats down or climb through the back.
2004 Ford Explorer - Great budget SUV
I was searching for a budget tow vehicle for my race car. The V8 Explorer has a high-tow rating thanks to its body on frame construction, and they made a ton of them in this generation so the price on the used market is low. The one I bought is fully loaded and sold for close to 40k originally, but I paid almost one-tenth of that.
Story
The cargo space has allowed me to pick up larger items like a snow blower and treadmill.
Pros
Lots of space. Relatively high towing capacity. Easy to find one used for a reasonable price. Great in snow.
Cons
Fuel mileage is what you would expect (17 mpg). Transmissions are a known issue. Not the easiest to work on but isn't horrible either.
