1998 Ford Explorer - The 1998 Ford Explorer Has An Excellent Drive Train
I purchased a high mileage 1998 Ford Explorer to use for its towing capability and to haul things in the rear cargo section. The vehicle had a towing package and was wired to hook up to a trailer. With a 5.0 L engine the vehicle has plenty of power. I like that because it has been my experience that four cylinder and small six cylinder engines fail early if used under heavy work conditions. They may get better gas mileage, but they have to work too hard to live a long life if used under work conditions. The thing I don't like about it is that small components like power window motors, door locks, and similar interior components do fail, and I always seem to be fixing these things. That is to be expected for high-mileage, older vehicles, but the Ford Explorer does seem to have more fail... (more)
Story
My dogs like to ride in the Ford Explorer. It is perfect, due to its high-bottom clearance, to take them on rough, back-country roads where they can get out and enjoy the outdoors.
Pros
The reliability of the drive train is clearly the top positive feature of this model. I have over 400,000 miles on my drive train, and it still only needs routine maintenance. Since I use it to haul, this is just amazing.
Cons
The major cons of this vehicle is the window motors and power locks fail and are hard to fix. If you plan to rent a trailer from U-Haul with an Explorer as the tow vehicle, they won't rent to you because of prior litigation. If you have your own trailer that isn't a problem, and the Explorer is an excellent tow vehicle.
2016 Ford Explorer - Best vehicle I have ever owned.
I am currently driving my 3rd Ford Explorer after previously leasing two older models. I absolutely love the explorer. It is roomy and large, but not too big to maneuver. The ride is incredibly smooth due to the crossover chassis the new Explorers have now.
Story
Had a great time taking some friends on a short weekend road trip - 4 of us were very comfortable and there was plenty of room for all of our luggage.
Pros
Best in class gas mileage. I average 18 to 19 miles a gallon. You won't find an SUV that size with comparable unless you are looking to spend a lot more on a hybrid. Incredibly smooth ride, almost more like a car than a truck. I compare that to driving my sister's navigator which is much larger and heavier and difficult to maneuver. Very roomy - I like that the base is so wide and there is a lot of space between myself and the door. 2 and 3rd rows also have more leg room that you would think. Comes with lots of bells and whistles like Ford SYNC touch screen, blue tooth and app capable (I c... (more)
Cons
I honestly cannot think of one thing about it that I do not like, maybe except for the occasional sync glitch. Other than that, my only regret is getting it in black. Gets very hot in the summer - but that is a Texas problem.
