This is my second Ford Explorer, my first one being a 1995 "mocha frost" colored model which I bought new and drove until 2013. This 2010 model is almost as nice but does feel a bit more cumbersome and hotter in the summer months. I feel confident about the Ford brand since I had such a good experience with my last one. After driving this now for almost 3 years, I am more comfortable in it.
Story
As mentioned before, this is higher off the ground then my last Explorer and the main downside is one of my black labs - he doesn't like to jump up that high so I had to buy a ramp for him. He is still hesitant at times, but if I have dog cookies at the ready, he will now go up the ramp!
Pros
My favorite features are: -the size which makes me feel safe and secure -the easy turning ability which stand out as particularly good considering the large size -the roominess inside for passengers and dogs -the flexibility of configuring the back seat for passengers or cargo or dogs -the power which I find comforting when I am entering a freeway or passing another vehicle
Cons
The most negative aspects are: -the black color - I have never owned a dark colored car before and didn't realize how difficult it is to keep it looking clean -the reduced visibility when backing up or looking before changing lanes -the front console is not designed in a way that makes it easy to store my purse or other items if there is a front seat passenger -the automated "oil change required" messages are annoying since many mechanics who work on the car forget to reset these and they pop up even after I've had whatever the task is completed. This means I have to go back another time a... (more)

1995 Ford Explorer - I loved this SUV

This was my first SUV, and I always wanted one. I was not disappointed. I took it camping , packed it full to move, hauled one kid off to college across the state. It was one of the best vehicles I ever owned. It being the Eddie Bauer edition was even better. It had digital read out for the temperature and mileage gas and such. At night driving I would open the moon roof and enjoy the stars. My husband hated it, but I loved it. Even I cried the day I had to say goodbye to it when it was time to retire it.
Story
The first camping trip to a lake up in Oregon was one of the best. We opened the back up and used it all day and night for many things: food prep, kids to hang out and at night we sat in back of it by fire and looked at the stars.
Pros
Drivability, comfort, roomy inside, folding bench seat, moon roof, digital readout, great fuel economy, easy to repair and clean, versatile, tough and powerful. I love how I could go to Costco and not worry bout how I was going to get things home if I happen to pick up a new cooler or BBQ.
Cons
The one and only thing about my SUV was the transmission, which I had to replace soon after I purchased and than a year later the transfer case. After that I had no other major issues with it for the rest of the time I owned it.
