2003 Ford Explorer - Good driver, excellent over the road and tough on dirt or muddy roads.

I have owned the Ford Explorer for 3 years now. I live out in the desert of Western Colorado. The road to my home is dirt or dirt and gravel. There are very rough areas where there are ruts or dips and holes. It is a tough go in bad weather when the mud turns to slick goo. The wonderful thing about this explorer is that it goes into 4 wheel drive automatically when the conditions turn bad. It is better than my jeep which you have to stop, put it in neutral and then put it in 4 wheel drive. This makes it easier when you get in a slick muddy spot and you do not have to turn the 4 wheel drive on. You do not lose momentum in troubled spots either. I take trips on many weekends to visit friends in neighboring towns and over the road it drives smooth and more like a like a car than an SUV. G... (more)
Story
We had a really bad snow and the wind had blown it pretty deep in some places and it was not always clear where those spots were. That night all 3 of our vehicles got stuck someplace trying to get home. My son had to bring his big truck out and pull all 3 of our 4 wheel drive vehicle out. My explorer we may have gotten out but since the other two got stuck too it was not smart to work it that ... (more)
Pros
My two favorite features about this vehicle is that it can handle the rough roads in mud or snow and the 4 wheel drive automatically turns on and off as you need it in rough weather. That is much better than other SUV's that you have to stop and turn in the hubs or switch it to 4 wheel drive. I also like the way it handles over the road. I drive 120 miles in a weekend as I go to family and friends for weekends 2 to 3 times a month. It is nice driving and handles the road. It may not be a luxury vehicle, but it has the ride of one. All the power windows work well and that is good! In thi... (more)
Cons
The negative things I have found about this vehicle is the panel over the back hatch has a tendency to crack and break on this model. Other later models they have modified it so that does not happen. I struggle with it not having some of the features I would like, like the ability to plug in my phone and listen to music over the speakers. The sway bars are also weak and I have had to have them replaced 2 times in a 2 year period. Now I drive on a very difficult road so it is not unusual to have some issues. But having to replace the sway bars each year is just a bit much. Door lock switch ... (more)

I have a 1994 Ford explorer that I hate. When I bought it, it was already 15 yrs. old. At the time of purchase, I felt that it drove outstandingly well and that the interior was amazing, given it's age. Could have cared less about the 4x4 aspect of it, as I am not into those activities, proved to be useful in my 8th year of owning it when it snowed. The car had the space I needed to take my entire family on outings without the feeling of being cramped. Plus, it held all the geared required and the two dogs. I love that it came with a tow hitch already on it. When I hauled my 4x8 trailer filled with various yard debris, it didn't with out complaint. I hate the fact that it is a Ford. My past experience with this brand is not stable. Every Ford I have ever owned was a crappy car. I bough... (more)
Story
Teaching my adult son on how to drive in the snow. In Oregon, we don't get much snow in my area. He has only had a license for four years, so I took him to an empty parking lot. Took vehicle out of 4x4 mode and put him in the seat. He drove for hours learning how to correct skids, slides, and spinning tires. Then we put it back into 4x4 mode, and he learned how that felt compared to with out i... (more)
Pros
Large enough for family, dogs and cargo. Towing capabilities. Air conditioning. The size of the engine compartment--allowed to be worked on easily. Cost of replaceable parts--always check that when buying a used car.
Cons
Crappy gas mileage. U-Haul won't allow trailer rentals with this SUV. Unable to diagnose check engine light. I paid $2,400 in 2009 (good) and have put into it over $5,000 in repairs (bad). The unreliability of vehicle.
