2002 Ford Explorer - Disappointed with quality of materials.
My vehicle is 16 years old but the only reason its lasted this long is because my father is a mechanic. We've done numerous repairs on the vehicle including changing out the alternator and fuel pump. The overall quality of materials is poor at best and causes a number of manufacturer defects to occur in colder climates.
Story
I used to camp out of the back of my Explorer, so having a bed in the back on a peaceful night is pretty nice.
Pros
Spacious interior that has a lot of leg room for large individuals. The back seats can also lay down which allows for the perfect amount of space for a twin-sized bed to be put in back if you are on a road trip.
Cons
The glue used by the manufacturer can't take common temperatures in northern United States. at -5 F or lower, the glue become stiff, pulling apart various pieces of the vehicle. It is very common to see the hatch of an Explorer cracked and destroyed for this reason. You will have to replace the inner-liner of the car because of this as well. The fuel pump is very difficult to get to on this vehicle as well. Its located within the gas tank and requires taking the gas tank off to service it.
2004 Ford Explorer - Love. This. Car..
There really aren't many negatives to this car. It's big enough to comfortable seat my 5'10" frame and that of four others. It's comfortable to ride in and great for long trips. The gas mileage is decent, but not ideal. Luckily, I don't have to drive it too far everyday, but I would be fine with it if I needed to. This car has been through three moves and has been an absolute champ through all of them.
Story
I was trying to get off an exit one time and two semis started getting over at the same time without turn signals. It was either mash down on the gas or get squashed so I mashed on the gas. It handled like a boss and I made it through.
Pros
Very roomy, comfortable. Truly a lovely vehicle. I wish this car would last forever.
Cons
I wish the gas mileage is better, because I love my car. The only other negative I can mention is how quickly it has rusted, however I live near a river so that could have a hand in it.
