2006 Ford Explorer - Off-road
When I came across a 2006 Ford Explorer for only a grand off craig's list, of course I was a bit apprehensive. But I checked it out and it seemed pretty clean, and the title was good. At first this car was to be my primary commuter to work, but the gas mileage just wasn't there for that. But I sure do love that 4x4 lever. This thing puts my old jeep wrangler, may it rest in pieces, to shame. In fact, I've winched out several Jeeps while out playing in the mountains now, with the exception of mud!
Story
I was driving with the kids and wife up to our favorite mountain side picnic area, and the entire road just crumbled beneath us and we started sliding down the cliff. It rolled, and rolled, and rolled. But thankfully, after finally finding the inertia switch, it started right back up and we made ourselves a new road to go eat lunch. I'll never forget the kids screaming "weeeeee!"
Pros
Very sturdy. Dependable. Lots of interior room. Decent ground clearance. Can Ford water at about 2 feet deep with zero issues, quite a few if it gets any deeper.
Cons
Bad gas mileage. The internet states it should be getting about 18 on the highway, but I get more like 14, 12 if it's above 100. Another flaw is it is so damn wide. I miss being able to drive on the 4wheeler trails like I could in my Wrangler, this thing just simply wont fit. Another issue is the weight, I've had to witch myself out of a few different mud puddles now that cars have driven right through...
2006 Ford Explorer - Clean Car For Reasonable Price
I am quite happy with my purchase of this vehicle from Germain Ford in Dublin, Ohio. At the time of purchase, I learned that this had been originally sold to its single previous owner by Germain Ford. I had also learned that the previous owner had traded in the vehicle for a newer model of the same kind of car.
Overall, I liked the quality of the car which was a major feature in its purchase. It was the sport edition, with racing-type seats. It also was a manual transmission, which was something I found appealing.
Story
In my town, I've been driving as a partner for Uber. I've gotten a fair bit of compliments regarding the fact that it is a manual transmission. I remember one person seemed quite impressed that I was able to drive it so fluidly.
Pros
Manual transmission- something that I was actively searching for in a vehicle.
Good fuel economy- something that was a pleasant surprise, a feature which is very important for a vehicle.
Clean interior- charcoal grey with red lacing. The style is similar to something that is racing-like in nature.
Cons
Air conditioning- not very cool, not something I noticed at the time of purchase.
Wear and tear of the manual shifter- looks like something that had been the result of years of use.
