2004 Ford Explorer Owner Ratings & Reviews

2004 Ford Explorer - Ford Explorer Perfect Family Vehicle.
I financed my Explorer due to the fact that I had a tiny compact car and was expecting my first child. We have many nieces and nephews and opted to pay extra for the third row seating, which accommodates a total of seven people. It is extremely roomy, even in the third row, enough to accommodate an adult with plenty of leg room. It is a basic model, with no extra bells and whistles which provides ease of driving without any extra complicated buttons/switches, etc. It is sportier than the minivan, which appeals to my husband. I own a cleaning company and all the seats fold down flat which provides plenty of room for all my business equipment. The hatchback opens either halfway or fully, which makes it easy if you are loading something large or heavy. The gas mileage isn't horrible for a... (more)
Story
We took my kids and my niece and nephews to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We had so much fun jamming to the stereo and looking forward to our impending trip. There was plenty of space for our beach gear, and everyone had enough space to themselves.
Pros
I love the third row seat option, as it allows more passengers when needed. When extra passengers are not needed, the seats fold down flat and easily which provides ample storage room for groceries etc. The car is roomy and the seats are comfortable.
Cons
The car needs to have more vents installed. The only vents are those in the front for the driver/passenger, and one on the floor of the hand rest for the second row passengers and is located on the floor. The third row has no vents for the passengers, and they are often uncomfortable.
2004 Ford Explorer - Solid reliable vehicle
I love how my car has held up over time. It is reliable and still looks good, even at 13 years old. It has plenty of room for our family and has made us want to invest in another Ford Explorer, when the time comes to upgrade.
Story
My husband and I used to love taking this car out as teens, because we could fit all of our stuff and pull a camper to fun events.
Pros
It has been reliable and sturdy over time. The interior is simple but timeless, with the exception of it missing the auxiliary jack, it still looks fairly modern. I love that it has so many cup holders; it makes life as a mom so much easier in the car. The trunk space is enormous! It goes for plenty of miles per tank of gas. I love the keypad to enter the car, it is so nice to never have to worry about locking myself out of my car. The hood is made of a material that won't rust. The 4WD works amazingly well!
Cons
This is one of the first years the car has AWD and when it kicks in, it kicks in hard, which has caused some problems with the front end. The rear heating and air does not work nearly as well as the front, which is difficult when I have my child in the back. When you are filling up gas, the tank clicks off before it should every time, and you have to pump your gas extremely slow.
We are starting to have issues with the rear windows not rolling down all of the time. The cruise control sometimes will not work if it has been raining, which I find weird. The paint has started to chip on the h... (more)
