2003 Ford Explorer Owner Ratings & Reviews
Write a Review
2003 Ford Explorer - Solid foundation. Quirky in structure.
Vehicle was purchased used, three years old at the time, with 19k miles on it. Was impressed by all the features it had. In 2006, TV/entertainment was a luxury especially with kids. The leather heated seats were very attractive and comfortable. Third-row seating was another option that came in handy, and when not using the third row, the amount of space in the trunk was most convenient. A great vehicle with kids on long trips. They had plenty of space and entertainment. It was comfortable for them to take a nap. Explorer gave a sense of safety, very solid, like a tank. With the heaviness of the vehicle, the gas mileage was and still is terrible. So very expensive with gas, but considering the space and extra features, most of the time it was easy to look past that. Right after ownershi... (more)
Story
Love to take the Explorer when we go camping. It is the absolute best because our tent connects to a vehicle, and with the trunk open, it gives so much usable space, and the Explorer allows us to get through all kinds of terrain.
Pros
Sense of safety, enjoyable to drive, classic design, many features, and a lot of room. It had 105,000 miles and was still holding up fourteen years later. Have had car accidents where other cars had hit the vehicle. Each time, the Explorer was barely damaged. Hence the nickname...the tank. Transmission and brakes lasted until 101,000 miles.
Cons
Clear coat started peeling after three years. Poor gas mileage, required oil often, many fuses and fuse replacements needed to keep all features working, battery drained often, and a door ajar sensor issue. A new sensor issue pops up every year for the past ten years. The past two years, the Explorer pulls forward/shakes and RPMs move up and down when stopped (like at a stop light), and this issue still has not yet been resolved by mechanics.
2003 Ford Explorer - Happy but hesitant
Living in Illinois having a 4X4 is great. It is sturdy and makes me feel safe. Because it is so big, parking in Chicago is tough but if you live in the suburbs you have nothing to worry about. Since the seats fold down, it worked well for carting my daughter and her friends around or for bringing bikes and other sporting equipment wherever they needed to go. The truck was also used to haul equipment for a small heating and air conditioning company. The paint on the hood started to chip about the time the warranty was up. I was told this was an issue with the paint and not only my car was affected. I bought the car new and other than the paint on the edge of the hood it still looks good. It has over 200,000 miles on it. The engine and catalytic converter has been replaced. If I understo... (more)
Pros
It is a four wheel drive. It is very roomy and good for moving stuff. It looks good even after all these years. It starts everyday no matter what the weather is like. The seats are not electronic but they fold up and down easily. It is comfortable. Parts, new and used, are easy to get. The back hatch is wide and can be used as a truck for business purposes as well as a family vehicle. It is a work horse. It makes you feel safe. The body has held up well. Because the inside is roomy it is easy to clean yourself with a wet/dry vac. Plenty of cup holders and places to charge you electronic de... (more)
Cons
Had to replace the engine after warranty expired because of a defect. Uses lots of gas. Paint chipped on hood because of an issued with the paint. Hard to park in Chicago. Tires are expensive. Hinge on back hatch rusted through 3 years ago and left back door hanging. Radio broke.
