2002 Ford Explorer Owner Ratings & Reviews

2002 Ford Explorer - Great vehicle for all kinds of travel
I love almost everything about this vehicle. I like the space it provides for friends and family. I also enjoy that it has the capability to get through all weather conditions. The payment is reasonable, and the interior is wonderful. The only downfall is that the gas in it is on the higher side. However, the tank is bigger so its comparable to a smaller car.
Story
The first time I got the chance to, I took my explorer out in mud to make sure the 4-wheel drive works and it does!
Pros
The top things about this vehicle is the space, the 4-wheel drive, and the ability to haul items and also have space for friends.
Cons
The only downfall is that the tank is so big that it takes more to fill up on gas.
2002 Ford Explorer - The third of many in a long line of Ford Explorers.
I have only ever driven Ford Explorers. I received my first one when I was 16, it was a 1992 Ford Explorer that was green on the top half and tan on the bottom half. It was the ugliest vehicle I've ever seen, but I loved it. I drove it, for almost two years, until it was junkyard material. I quickly moved on to my second vehicle, a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport. Although I was not a fan of having two doors instead of four, I was able to see past that and loved that vehicle as much as the first. I drove that one for almost 6 years, I made many trips back and forth to college (4 hours one way) and road trips out of town for vacation. I feel incredibly safe in Explorers. I once hit an adult male deer at 60 mph in this one and the only damage was a cracked grill and one of my headlights was poi... (more)
Story
Recently, I drove my Explorer to a 5-day music festival in the middle-of-nowhere Atlanta on a farm that got rained out. While many, many cars got stuck and had to be towed out of the mud, I engaged 4WD and got around with absolutely zero problems. Though I did make sure to have a full gas tank, for added weight, before parking. It was effortless going up and down muddy hills and through deep m... (more)
Pros
Key-less entry/code entry, cruise control, lumbar support, 4WD, smooth ride, sound system, electronic seat adjustment (only for driver), spacious, third row seating, gas tank size - I drove 400 miles without refueling and some to spare, lock button in the cargo area, tough and durable, sharp turn radius for a larger sized SUV.
Cons
The air flow is stuck on defrost setting. Even if you set it to feet, vent, both, etc., air only blows out of the top defrost vent. The temperature control still works, but the air flow location is stuck on defrost if turned on. The gas mileage isn't ideal, but it's to be expected in a larger SUV. When you turn on 4WD, there is no light to indicate it's on or off when you turn it off. You have to move a bit and feel it out yourself if it is on. This could potentially be problematic in certain situations where you need to know if it's on/off before taking off.
