1999 Ford Explorer Owner Ratings & Reviews

1999 Ford Explorer - This car is a beast.
This is my first car I have ever had so I like lots of things about it but I recognize that it is not a perfect vehicle. It is very sturdy as I have already accumulated over 125k miles on the car and it has only every broken down once. It needs parts replaced here and there but overall it works great for what I need. I simply drive to and from school and it gets the job done. It doesn't have the best miles per gallon but it does have fairly decent miles per gallon, so it is somewhere in the middle of the pact. It is also very durable to the weather and seasons as it is a four wheel drive car. So when you go into snow or rainy weather you can use four wheel drive when necessary. The car also is spacious and can hold up to five people. Two in the front and three in the back. The airbag c... (more)
Story
Driving back from Lake Tahoe with it snowing and using 4 wheel drive while. I could barely see in front of me.
Pros
Lots of trunk space. Lots of passenger space. It's very reliable. It's simple and gets the job done.
Cons
No the best MPG. Not the highest performance. Maintenance needed every so often. Older.
1999 Ford Explorer - This is a gem of a car.
This car drives like a dream, both on the interstate and on dirt roads. It has a beautiful dash layout, although it's too old to have GPS or a lot of other electronic gadgets, and does not alert you with dinging or other noise if you leave the lights on when you turn off the ignition. I purchased it as a stopgap, and was going to drive it while I looked for a newer car. That was over a year ago, and I'm so happy with it I stopped looking for a replacement.
Story
When I bought the car I noticed it had an overdrive on/off button. I couldn't for the life of me figure out whether to keep it on or off, so got on the interstate and started pushing the button. After a few tries each way, my grandson pulled out his iPad and looked it up. So much for technologically gifted grandma.
Pros
This car has a tremendous amount of cargo space. With the back seats down I can haul lumber, animal feed, and other farm implements. With those seats up, I can carry my grandchildren and their animals, with luggage and groceries in the back. The air conditioning and heat are wonderful. It isn't new enough to have temperature control, but the interior environment is always comfortable. It gets great gas mileage and has a clean, modern look and feel. it is easy to change light bulbs in the taillight configuration, without replacing an entire assembly.
Cons
The only drawback I have encountered in the year I have owned the vehicle is the inconvenient, hard to access spare tire storage. It's located under the car, but cannot be lowered or raised through an opening in the back bumper. You must actually get up under the car and unfasten the bolt to lower it. I don't have the strength to lower it, much less replace it after changing a tire or buying a new one.
