The 2001 Escape is the first year of this vehicle, but Ford got it pretty right on the first try. If you want a small, decently quick small SUV, then get this one
Story
I've driven this car to multiple music festivals. It got us there and back with no problems.
Pros
The 2001 Escape has been a simple, reliable car to drive. I've not had to do anything other than regular maintenance. Compared to modern cars, it's small and has great visibility. Most of the engine components are easily accessible if you are the DIY type. If you have a larger dog, the bench seats in the second row give them plenty of space to lie down, or you can put them in the back.
Cons
For the XLS models there's nothing really in the way of comfort or convenience. No cruise control, only basic seat configuration and no climate vents or controls for the back seats. So while there's less to go wrong, it's not going to be for someone who wants all the niceties.

The vehicle was reliable and had plenty of power for its size. It also had all-wheel drive, which was completely automatic and independent of the control of the driver. It also had plenty of ground clearance in case vehicle was taken off roads. Controls were logically laid out and heat/AC worked very well. The vehicle's seating was somewhat cramped, especially for larger people, and it was not an ideal vehicle for driving long distances as far as comfort goes. Reliability has been very good so far.
Story
I was able to navigate partially flooded streets and avoid getting stuck in mud during a recent rainstorm and flash flood, thanks to the ground clearance and all-wheel drive.
Pros
Four-wheel drive. Plenty of power. Good ground clearance. Very good heating and A/C. Plenty of storage room in the back. Good handling.
Cons
Vehicle tends to take off upon accelerating from full stop. Seating is somewhat cramped, especially for larger people. Too much road noise. Can be difficult for larger people or physically limited people to get into and out of.

We have purchased three vehicles from them. They are conveniently located to us. The salesmen were not pushy, but were informative. One of our purchases was with a trade-in and we felt we received a fair value for that trade-in. One of our purchases was brought in from another lot, in a nearby town, to immediately satisfy my requests instead of having to order it. The service department does not require an appointment and they are fast.
