Subaru is known for its all-wheel drive. I work in a field that requires me to appear at work regardless of how bad the weather is outside, and often in the winter months I've had to drive to work with over a foot of snow on the ground, and drive back home at the end of my shift with more than that. I have always felt in control of my vehicle, no matter the weather. This has led to greater confidence when I'm behind the wheel, and I don't have to have the "death grip" on the steering wheel. As a result, not only am I more comfortable, but my passengers are too. The car has held up exceptionally well over the last 75,000 miles and six years, and aside from a wheel rebalancing, the only thing I have had to do is perform regular, routine maintenance tasks (some of which are easy enoug... Since I have to go to work when the weather is terrible, I was driving to work one day during a "state of emergency" when the municipalities closed down roads. I was pulled over by local law enforcement, showed my credentials, and released to go about my business. I asked the patrolman if he wanted to give me an escort to my work, so I didn't get stopped by other law enforcement, and he told... (more)
A Favor
The all-weather package on this trim, which includes the front windshield wiper heaters, front seat heaters, and side mirror heaters, are my favorite features. The all-wheel drive is outstanding, in a class of its own, having driven nearly a dozen other AWD vehicles, this one makes it seem like dry pavement. The sunroof is a nice thing to have, and the visibility from the driver's seat is excellent in all directions. The controls on the steering wheel make sense, and the instrument clusters are easy to read. The stereo and speakers are great. The CVT transmission is very good on gas for... (more)
En Contra
Subaru tends to use existing, established technology instead of the latest and greatest cutting-edge things. This reliability comes at a trade off. For example, my Bluetooth is not able to stream audio to the radio unit, which requires me to connect an AUX cable to my iPhone, which is a small yet annoying task I have to complete anytime I want to listen to streaming music or music on my phone. The 2.5i 4-cylinder Boxer engine is good but can feel somewhat underpowered when accelerating up a hill during warmer months when the air conditioner is on.

I purchased a used 2011 Subaru Outback a year ago from a dealership in New York. I have always owned Japanese cars, because I trust their ability to make quality, long-lasting vehicles. With just under 80,000 miles, I was skeptical about buying a car with so much tread but was reassured that vehicles from Subaru last significantly longer than most other cars. In short, this is the best car I've ever purchased. Its capabilities and control far exceed my expectations. Below I will list my personal opinion on the benefits and shortcomings of the vehicle. Oil changes are incredibly easy and the car doesn't even need to be lifted to access the oil valve for draining or the filter.

I regularly use this vehicle to transport my kayaks to and from the water. Without this car, I would never have been able to purchase or move these mini-boats. We have also gone on tons of camping trips and been the epicenter of storage and utilization with our friends.
A Favor
The car is incredibly safe: Control and safety features are above what I'm used to seeing in cars. The AWD technology is a Subaru standard and it helps you maintain control of your vehicle on the road. The Outback has a massive interior - or at least it makes you feel that way when you get in the car. There is tons of storage space and leg room for your passengers. The roof rails on top of the vehicle are able to be adjusted parallel or perpendicular to the forward motion of the car - I love this feature for additional storage above you or for transporting large objects like kayaks and ca... En Contra
The breaks on this car wear down your pads faster than normal vehicles, IMO. This isn't a make-or-break downside, but, unfortunately, expect to spend more on that aspect. The paint wears quicker than others (exterior) - this is easily remedied, though. The car lacks power unless you buy the 3.6L engine version of the car. I did not.
