I purchased my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup with the 5.9L Cummins turbo diesel engine used in 2005 with approximately 38K miles on it. I was looking for a way to consolidate my life into one vehicle that was capable of hauling, had decent mileage, comfortable, and had longevity. For the first two years of its life with me, I was driving approximately 2K business miles a month and was able to get on average 22mpg. The truck was comfortable, spacious, and versatile. There were several interior features like the center console and power plug ins that made working on a laptop convenient. The storage under the back seat was extremely handy for hauling basic gear but leaving the backseat open for passengers. The fold-out cargo racks under the back seat have been a life saver in using the... (more)
Story
Several years ago we were caught by a rogue snowstorm and had to drive out of the woods with 6-8 inches on the ground, and the snow coming down fast and no paved roads for 50 miles. It looked like a truck commercial with the snow flying up from our tires and the pines all around. While a bit nerve wracking, the drive was a hoot because we were confident in the truck's ability to keep us mov... (more)
Pros
I liked that it is a capable and stable in the winter on snow and ice, that the Cummins is solid as a rock, and that it was designed with so many comfort options in the cab. The sound system, although dated now, has stood the test of time and delivers excellent sound. The cargo-management systems in the cab are great, and the work assist items allow me to run, charge, and store my electronics and laptops easily in the console and under the center seat.
Cons
Everything on the truck is heavy duty, so it requires heavy-duty parts which are expensive. Tires are E range so they run $150 apiece. The entire front end will run $2k -$4K to replace, and it will require replacement over time or all at once. The rust on the fenders above the wheels in the back is a constant issue. The transmission will need to be replaced or rebuilt before 300K.

This truck is from the "golden year" of Dodge Ram. It has the redesigned Cummins engine, but does not have all of the environmental and fuel efficiency gadgets of later model years that have caused so many problems. The engine is very quiet and has plenty of power. I have hauled horses and livestock all over the country. I have found this truck to be reliable and powerful.
Story
I travel with horses and livestock a great deal. Having a reliable truck has allowed me to go on long solo trips and have great experiences without having to worry about vehicle problems. The speakers in this truck are excellent. When you travel a lot of miles, music is a friend, and I really appreciate the fact that Dodge put some good speakers in this truck.
Pros
The redesigned Cummins is very quiet compared to other diesels. I appreciate the comfortable, roomy interior and smooth suspension. The truck has been very reliable. At 125k miles I had the first major work done on it which was to replace the control arms and tie rod ends. Other than that, it's just been fluid changes and maintenance.
Cons
Really the only negative I've experienced with this truck is the factory stereo/clock. It had difficulty from the beginning, with the CD player rattling when the engine was started. The clock stopped keeping accurate time within the first three years. Finally, the stereo ate a CD last year and stopped working. We have replaced it. The engine can be a little slow to respond when I need to accelerate rapidly. Flooring the accelerator usually results in a pause before the engine responds, which can be frustrating when I'm trying to merge into fast traffic. For example, I have the long bed mod... (more)
