2001 Dodge Grand Caravan - The Dodge Grand Caravan is a good "mommy car."

We purchased this car because we needed a vehicle that could transport groceries, carpentry equipment, and all of the things a small child needs. The Grand Caravan has proven to be a good "mommy car", as my son calls it. It has enough room for groceries, luggage when travelling, and on the occasions when my husband needs to borrow it, his work equipment. As we bought it used, it has issues with the electric windows and locks, which can be inconvenient. It lacks many of the bells and whistles of newer models (electric doors, CD players or Bluetooth connectivity), but it has been a very reliable car for three years. I do wish that it had a center console, simply because the space between the driver and passenger seats ends up accumulating a lot of junk, which becomes hard to contain. Sti... (more)
Story
We have driven this vehicle through the mountains on family trips; the view is always great, and the Grand Caravan has handled the twists and turns very well!
Pros
The Dodge Grand Caravan drives like a smaller car but has the space to accommodate a family with a small child. It has been extremely reliable, despite the fact that it was purchased used and is now 16 years old. Replacement parts are reasonably priced and easily self-serviced, which helps us save money on repairs. My husband refers to the van as a "beast," because it has had so few serious problems since purchase. The dashboard is bare bones and, therefore, easy to navigate. Gas mileage seems to be comparable to a coupe of the same model year. The removable bench seats allow for more spac... (more)
Cons
The 2001 Grand Caravan Sport has no center console between the passenger and driver seats; this means that there is a large space between seats where junk tends to accumulate. We have a basket to attempt to corral our own mess, but it would have been nice if it came with one. The radio is bare bones with only a tape deck (not even a CD player!), which makes connecting other sources of audio cumbersome, usually requiring a few more wires than I'd like. When we purchased the vehicle, it already had problems with the electric windows, and as a result only one window can be opened. The automat... (more)
