I had wanted a Dodge Grand Caravan for about 10 years before we actually bought one. We happend to get one as a rental because our previous minivan had been totaled. I fell in love with the automatic dual sliding doors. Before my eldest daughter passed away, it was difficult to find a vehicle that I could get her in and out of easily because she was wheelchair-bound and I could only transfer her to the front seat in other vehicles, which didn't feel very safe since she was under 80 lbs. With the Caravan, I could easily place her in one of the captain seats in the second row, ON EITHER SIDE! I can't even begin to tell you how excited I was about that! I also loved that the rear seats had their own air vents, my poor kids didn't have to sweat it out in the back seat during the Arizona su... (more)
Story
When we first got our van, my nephew and niece used to stay with us during the holidays (they were about 7 and 6 respectively). My brother called me one day after they had gone back home and told me about an assignment he turned in at school. The prompt was, "if you could have any car in the world, what would it be?" My brother thought it was hilarious that instead of saying a Mustang GT like ... (more)
Pros
I love that it's roomy, first of all. I LOVE the automatic dual sliding doors. I feel a lot safer being able to let my kids out of the van away from traffic if I need to. The stow and go seats are a dream compared to what we had before. I hated taking out the seats of our old minivan and they were really heavy, so my husband had to take them out for me. Now the seats stow themselves with just a few pulls and we have lots of room for big items. I also like the underseat storage compartments, they're huge! I also like that the back row can also be used as a seat to look out the hatch, instan... (more)
Cons
I do have to say, as much as I love our van, I was a little disappointed in how many repairs we've had to make. They weren't huge ones, but I've had a Toyota Corolla as well for the last 15 years and we haven't had to make as many repairs on that as we have for the Caravan, and the Caravan is only 8 years old. We had to have the radiator replaced because it started to overheat, then the thermostat when it was about 5 years old. The doors started glitching when the van was about 6 years old. The water pump went out this past summer. The driver's side door window stopped going up and down th... (more)

This vehicle was purchased as a replacement for our 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan, which we drove for 14 years and had to replace after it was stolen ... twice ... When we first drove the 2012, it "felt" just like the old one; all the controls, displays, etc. were right where we expected them to be, and everything operated quite intuitively to us. There were even a few nice surprises, like an added storage space under the glove compartment and a little compartment perfect for stashing sunglasses. The old van still had a cassette player, while the newer one has a jack for plugging in audio devices (nope, ours doesn't have Bluetooth). But overall, we've come to a new appreciation of the older van. The newer one just isn't put together as nicely and feels like it's already falling apart. The p... (more)
Story
Most of our friends and neighbors didn't really notice we had bought a new van; it's the same make, model and, yes, even color and shade as the old one. I always keep a certain antenna ball on the antenna to help me find my van in parking lots; perhaps it was the transfer of that antenna ball that made the purchase so unnoticeable!
Pros
We really like the stow-and-go seating; it's very easy to fold up the seats and makes for a very large interior. As I commented above, the audio jack is nice, though certainly most people would prefer Bluetooth these days. I really like that it feels like not much has changed from the earlier model, though I'm sure some people would list that as a "con." There was not much of a learning curve in upgrading from the older model to this one, except for a few key areas (see cons below).
Cons
This van has a delay when attempting to accelerate. When driving stop-and-go in the city, it's not very noticeable, but on the freeway, it's intolerable. It gets worse when driving slightly uphill, for example, on a freeway on-ramp. Compared to the older model, this van has a wider body section between the back passenger compartment windows and the rear window, making it impossible to turn your head to look towards the next lane behind you when driving on the freeway. The angles and depth perception of the side-view mirrors have been adjusted in an attempt to compensate, making it impossib... (more)
