Datsun Owner Ratings & Reviews

1980 Datsun 210 - Affordable Dependability
This was an excellent automobile for its low price. Even with 300,000+ miles, this car was comfortable with little cabin noise. After owning it for over a decade, less than $1,000 was spent on maintenance and no major issues developed. Engineering and design quality were impeccable, with all components in the vehicle easily accessible and serviceable - a vast change from modern vehicles which are more difficult to service and maintain at an affordable price. Although having what seems today to be a rather small engine at only 1.5 liters (1488 CC), the four cylinder has worked perfectly driving at freeway speeds consistently. The quality of the suspension system in the car is also excellent, providing a comfortable ride that allows for excellent handling despite the vehicle being w... (more)
Story
This car was owned by my Grandfather and Grandmother and driven all over the United States and Canada before I became owner in 2004. After I became owner, the car drew onlookers at gas stations and other businesses would ask the number of miles on the car. They always said wow to hear and see that the car has over 300,000 miles and that I drove it for over 150,000 as the second owner. So f... (more)
Pros
This car was an excellent and fairly-comfortable fuel saver, getting around 30 MPG combined highway/city, and up to 36 in highway driving when kept below 60 MPH/100 KPH. The vehicle also has a very large trunk storage space for such a small vehicle, making it able to be used for driving on trips as well as in an urban environment. The vehicle is designed to cruise perfectly between 55-60 MPH (90-100 KPH), quickly getting to speed when the accelerator pedal is pressed completely to the floor and doing so safely without losing power. Although sparse on amenities as an early 1980s budget aut... (more)
Cons
The vehicle does suffer in comfort due to the small size, which is effectively a subcompact. The size makes the car suitable for only two adults comfortably; more passengers will cause a lack of leg space for all occupants and make the car very uncomfortable to drive. The three-speed automatic transmission can also be viewed as a con, as it does not allow for maintaining speeds much faster than 60 MPH/100 KPH. This is not surprising, as the maximum speed limit in the USA when the car was sold was 55 MPH. The dash and interior materials are also very dated and do not hold up well with a... (more)
1981 Datsun 210 -
I purchased my Datsun from a seller who was going to take it to pick a part. He said that it was drivable but had too many problems for him to want to fix. All the accessories worked well, the brakes were responsive and the car handling and steering functioned reasonably. However, the clutch slipped when accelerating on an incline. I used the car for transportation to work for a year and a half before selling it. It was nothing fancy. The car was reliable transportation. The interior was very bland and needed seat covers. The carpet was worn and the dash was cracked.
Story
I took some of my friends from college and high school to Magic Mountain. The 5 Freeway in that direction is fairly, steeply inclined. We wound up driving on the far right shoulder in 2nd gear at 40 mph, but we made it. When we talk we still remember how unwise that was and yet miraculous that it all worked out. We still had fun at the park.
Pros
The car's reliability has seldom been matched, especially given the price. The clutch did slip when I bought the car, but it never got very bad, even after a year of every day driving. Eventually, I replaced the clutch and the car had more power accelerating from stop lights. The radio functioned reasonably. The seats had seat covers.
Cons
The Datsun 210 model is a budget car. There are no luxury accessories. This did not present much problem to me at the time as a teenager.
1979 Datsun 210 - It has great gas mileage.
I really enjoy its size. It's really small so it handles well. This also helps my gas mileage to be about 32 MPG on the highway. It does run a little loud, but it's really old and honestly needs a new engine.
I get asked quite frequently about my car by random people. Especially near auto shops. I've had several cash offers as well.
Story
Best friend in high school was obsessed with my car and named it Samara. I would occasionally find her sitting in my car or butt prints on the hood from her.
Pros
Good Gas Mileage
There aren't any computers in it, so most of the repairs can be done by myself.
I greatly prefer driving it mostly because it's manual.
Small so I can fit in any parking space, it's compact.
Two doors for extra cool
Runs smooth once you get going.
The trunk is surprisingly spacious.
Cons
It's so old, things randomly break. Seat-belts, windows, radio, even had the mirror fall off.
Parts are hard to find sometimes because of metric systems.
No air conditioning
Paint is chipping/fading
Takes forever to start in the cold.
Windows leak, needs new seals.
No electric locks or windows.
Only a 4 speed transmission
If it isn't started at least once a week, it can be a pain to get going.
If any weight is added to the vehicle (people) you really can tell. It takes so much more time to gain speed if even just one extra person is in the car.
