I have the manual transmission Chevy Sonic with the turbo. It's responsive, quick, and quiet. However it has some quirks, and the build quality is not super-great. For a first car, it's definitely worth the purchase cost, but it is questionable on if one can afford something in a better price bracket. It's also one of the rare cars you can get a manual transmission + sunroof combinations in.
Story
When I was test driving this particular car model (although not my particular car), the battery in the test model was dead, and after stalling out in the intersection, we had to wait in the cold for a tow truck.
Pros
Cost. It's a cheap hatchback. Manual transmission. Those are getting difficult to find. Fuel economy. Even driving aggressively, I still average around 40 mpg. Stereo. Surprisingly not bad. I do not have the infotainment with the built-in display, and it's so much better than the one with the bright screen.
Cons
Quality. The wiring in the headlamps is easy to short out even if you don't take the light bulb out. So headlamps go quickly. Quality again. Driving through puddles then parking can make the transmission not shift into gear. You will then need to pump the clutch until there's enough something in the system for the gears to engage. OnStar buttons on the mirror. Easy as heck to accidentally press. Cost of a Sirius XM radio subscription.

The vehicle gets from point A to point B, looks pretty okay, and had its interior designed by aliens with a very different set of appendages.
Pros
It gets from point A to point B. Also, this tiny, fuel efficient car fits a large car seat in the back and only makes the front passenger slightly miserable as a result.
Cons
There is no all-doors-lock control on the front passenger door. There is one weirdly positioned in the middle of the dashboard, in a position you may not see. So if you need your passenger to open the doors, they need to know it's there.
