1995 Chevrolet Corsica - Love it!!!!
I buy 'clunkers' on craigslist for cheap transportation and then I junk them. My 95 Chevy Corsica is by far the best car I've ever owned and is in no way a 'clunker'! I bought it for 700 over a year ago and it's still running strong. The engine is quiet, smooth, and has a surprising kick to it (it's a v6). Cosmetically, it looks average: no dents or rust and it has all of it's windows and lights. The interior is a little rough with a couple of torn seats, but seats don't get me to work. The engine is amazing!! It's fast- so I can road rage with substance! It has amazing shocks for it's age. I feel very safe in it and protected by it's weight from the heavy metal it's made from. It's still got working automatic windows, heater and an a/c unit. And it's great on gas! Of all my previous '... (more)
Story
I drove it to my mechanic (who is painfully aware of my clunker buying habit) and he was shocked at what an amazing car it is and the deal I got it for!
Pros
The engine, safe feel and fuel efficiency.
Cons
Seats are a bit torn.
1996 Chevrolet Corsica - Sturdy
I bought this used with 50K miles on it and thought, "aw, what a junker." I couldn't be more wrong. I've since put another 70k miles on it, and it's still running great. It's old, 20+ years, so some basic maintenance is obviously required. But it's always been reliable. It turns on without any fuss, and the air conditioning unit goes into full swing (doesn't need to 'warm up' or anything). It drives comfortably and low, so you can have gentle steering wheel movements. It doesn't pick up as fast as newer cars (0-60 takes about 30 seconds), but it does have gumption.
Story
Had a young passenger in the car for a group hiking trip, told her to roll down the window to give the hiking pass to the canyon agent, and it took her about two minutes to figure out a crank 'roll down' window (vs. a button). She exclaimed with glee, "It's vintage!"
Pros
Reliable and lots of life. I'm told that Corsica's have an average of 200k miles before big repairs start making it not worth the while, so I still have lots of time left with mine. Comfortable—not a lot of accessories but it's comfortable for long and short trips. Sturdy—it's a non flattering, '90s design that was meant to help stay low and balanced on to the ground. Definitely anti-theft looking (because of its age people thing there's nothing worth stealing in it).
Cons
With its age, the wiring is a little loose. So you have to keep on top of things. The check engine light and the coolant light stay on even when we take it in and get a clean bill of health (which we do with every oil change and annual maintenance). The wires just want to keep us alert. Also, the gas meter is unreliable. It can run out of juice on you and still say there's a 1/4 tank left, so we always need to fill up at halfway. Natural little things that happen with age. Just stay on top of it, and you'll be fine
1994 Chevrolet Corsica - Reliable and simple.
I really liked this vehicle. It was an extremely good value, and the interior held up well with it being 16 years old at my time of purchase. It does not have all the bells and whistles that come with newer cars, but it did have the ones desired by a more simple person such as myself. These features are power windows and, most important to me, cruise control. I have a nasty habit of speeding. The car was also the perfect size. With how compact it was, I could easily fit into the tiny parking spaces that are often available in the city because most cars can't fit in them. However, having four doors also made the tiny vehicle feel large. The trunk was also relatively spacious. The defrost was fast acting, and the car was great in the snow. I did have a few minor issues, but that is to be... (more)
Story
This car was my first car that I learned how to drive in. Everyone always remembers their first car. I think of all the fun I had cruising the town with my friends and going on my first date. It definitely wasn't the coolest car, but it got me where I needed to be, and I saved a lot of money getting the same use out of it as I would have with a car that costs more. When I was driving the car, ... (more)
Pros
Can fit in small spaces, has cruise control and power windows, and spacious for its size.
Cons
Does not have CD player or any modern way to play music.
