The Blazer is a larger vehicle than I really need, so the gas mileage isn't as good as I'd like. It's reliable and strong. At 19 years old and 195,000 miles, it still has no significant problems.
Story
This is a solid, workhorse vehicle. It hasn't generated any fun or memorable stories, it just goes and goes.
Pros
Every mechanic that's seen it has said the engine will go on forever. This 1999 Blazer always starts and always stops. The radio still works. It tells me the temperature outside and what direction I'm headed in. The front passenger seat has a grab bar that helps older people get in and out. For a truck, the seats aren't too high off the ground. Plenty of room in the back. The rear seats fold down in case you need more cargo space in the rear. The tires aren't special, so buying new ones doesn't have to cost a fortune.
Cons
Like many of my older Chevys, the Blazer has developed electrical gremlins in the dashboard. The odometer went dark (at 195,000 miles) a couple of years ago. Sometimes when I go over a bump, the A/C stops cooling. Then another bump and it starts again. The horn stopped working, so the mechanic installed an alternative button on the dash. The front doors no longer close snugly, so water gets in during a windy rainstorm. I purchased it used (5 yrs, 52k miles) from a relative. It Is now 7 years old with 102,000 miles. It has been very reliable. I am capable of doing many repairs myself. I have replaced two alternators, but this was a simple job. I recently had to replace the radiator. But again, it wasn't terribly difficult to replace.
Story
My daughter learned how to drive in this car.
Pros
The Blazer is a great vehicle for a family, or for people who want an average sized SUV. It is also good for driving and parking and 4x4.
Cons
The only consistent problems are 1) the brake warning light will come on for a few days once a year or so, 2) A/C has required a can of refrigerant every year for the last 2 or 3 years, 3) if it sits for approximately three days, coolant will leak from the driver's side engine block to water pump connection. Oddly it has to sit for a few days, if it is driven every day this does not occur. The leak is not serious - less than an ounce in 24 hours. I just have to keep an eye on the overflow receptacle.
