2000 Buick Century - Great commuter car
My 2000 Buick Century has been a great asset to me. I commute 2+ hours each way to work up and down a mountain pass. The car is in decent shape for being 17 years old. The interior is very nice, minimal wear and tear. The motor is still going strong, even after climbing a large mountain pass five days a week. The paint job is just barely starting to dull. This car is so spacious that I am able to sleep laying down in the backseat very comfortably on my lunch breaks. The gas mileage that this Buick gets is very good in my opinion. I only have to fill up maybe every three or four days, and it only costs me $25 to $35, depending on current gas prices. I have never had any problems with any mechanical parts. For instance, the windows roll up and down automatically and with ease. The... (more)
Story
One day, the kids and I decided to go horseback riding and my husband had the truck so we all pilled into the Buick and it fit us all and all of our stuff, which I was very surprised at. We had a beautiful day riding and picnicking, and thank goodness the car was big enough or we would have missed out that day.
Pros
Low fuel mileage and great A/C and heater. Everything in great working order. Very spacious. My favorite part of the vehicle is the reliability of it.
Cons
Negative is the color: the gold is ugly. No cup holders is probably number one though.
2000 Buick Century - Dependable car, strong engine
I'm 6'4", and I need a car with a lot of legroom. The 2000 Century is one of the last cars that has the gear shift on the steering column, meaning there's no middle plate to confine the right leg. It also has over 45" of legroom, easily the most in a non-premium car of that era. The car performs well, with good acceleration and a smooth ride.
Story
A cat jumped onto the car while it was stopped at a non-busy residential intersection. Rubbed its nose and face on the windshield, and laid down. And closed its eyes. I enabled the windshield washer (and wipers), and it took off quickly.
Pros
The main plus for me is the legroom, as described above. The engine is strong and is easily good for 250,000 to 300,000 miles. The ride is very smooth and quiet, even at an advanced age. There are both driver and passenger air bags. The radio/cassette stereo system gives rich, full sound. The drive train and suspension are still usable after 150,000 miles. Repairs are minimal on this vehicle and are less than average for all vehicles. The Century will give the drive the advantage in a collision vs. Almost any other auto (but not vs. SUVs or pickups).
Cons
Due to the big engine, the gas mileage is sub-par: around 18 mpg in the city and about 27 on the highway. Air conditioning subtracts about 3mpg. The computer system is subject to false-positives, e.g. The "Service Engine" light will come on when nothing is wrong. The Catalytic Converter is known to go out after about 100,000 miles and can be expensive. The Antilock Brake System (ABS) is also known to malfunction, although it does alert (via warning lights) when it's in this state.
