2003 BMW 5 Series - BMW not worth the hassle
The 2002 BMW 525i that I owned was my first upper level luxury car. I owned the wagon model. It was accommodating in size to my needs. The performance was good for the most part with adequate pick up and torque. Cornering was good and braking was good. The ground contact of the tires was excellent. The amount of maintenance needed and the cost of the maintenance were absolute deal breakers for anyone considering this car. The depreciation on the car is also incredibly steep.
Pros
Lots of options and upgrades - heated seats, power sunroof, power tilt wheel, power adjustable seats with memory.
The car had good road handling characteristics.
The visibility in the car was good.
The car was fairly fun to drive.
The level of finish on the car was impressive to other people.
Cons
The cost of depreciation was well over $2000 per year. It was bought used for $18,500 and sold 5 years later for $7200.
The cost of maintenance and repairs was astronomical. During this same 5 year period, I spent over $5000 on repairs and maintenance. A fuel pump replacement was $2200. A cracked headlight assembly after a fender bender was $900.
The ABS light came on after 6 months of ownership. Eight trips to the dealership or private mechanic later, the issue still wasn't addressed. I ended up replacing the valve cover gasket myself since the mechanic wanted $450 for the job, and that ... (more)

2008 BMW 5 Series - Carmax Louisville
Easiest way to purchase a vehicle, with stock online, and upfront pricing. Also, have great return, and maintenance policy. Knew the kind of car I wanted to purchase. Found it online, while using my phone on the way back from a road trip. They had the car waiting for me ready to go when I got back. Signed and drove it home that day. Had minor mechanical issues within the first month of purchase. They quickly repaired and got me going again with no cost to me.
