1997 BMW 5 Series - Exactly what I would expect from BMW
The E39 platform has earned a reputation for being a driver's car. And it is well deserved. It is highly responsive and will make anyone feel like a racecar driver. It took a long time searching to find one with the manual transmission, and I am glad I endured the wait. The ZF manual transmission is a precision unit that puts the sport in this sports sedan.
Story
Every three series owner I meet has a million questions about the quality and experience of moving to a five series.
Pros
Independent front and rear suspension directly connects you to the road. The 2.8L inline six cylinder has enough power to make it fun to drive, but is still small enough to preserve some fuel economy. I have had Mustangs and Camaros and they were never this much fun to drive. And then there is maintenance. Every filter (oil, air and cabin air) is accessible standing at the front bumper.
Cons
Suspension bushings are a little less durable than I had hoped. Replacing them with aftermarket pieces improved handling a small bit as well as eliminated the vibrations.
