2006 BMW 3 Series - Luxury vehicle that lasts for a long time
The BMW 325i (2006) lasted a surprisingly long time. I had purchased the vehicle used from a good used car dealer who also inspected and fixed the car to essentially new condition. Given that I had purchased the vehicle when it was used for five years already, and was able to use it regularly for the next six years without much problem, I was surprised how robust it was built.
Story
I found out about the winter problem in a snowstorm. Having not been previously warned that sedans, such as the BMW 3-series, are not built to navigate through big snowstorms.
Pros
One of the best things I liked about the car was its acceleration and the way it responded to your every wish. You felt like you have total control of the car at all times. You can speed through a narrow lane without real worries since you feel you're in total control.
Cons
As BMWs in general are foreign cars, consider yourself warned that anytime you buy a foreign luxury car, that your mechanic (or any mechanic, for that matter) will not have spare parts for your car just lying around. Your mechanic will have to order the part he needs should something go wrong with your car. That can take an additional few days to a week. And parts for foreign luxury cars also don't come cheap. Before you purchase a foreign car, add that into your maintenance budget.
2004 BMW 3 Series - This car is by far my favorite car.
This is a solid car, and set the standard for all luxury cars in it's class. The style of this year is by far my favorite, and it is solidly built (one of the last few years they actually built the cars in Germany). The X drive really is amazing in the ice/snow. I have seen many cars get stuck, while I drive right past. It's missing a lot of features that newer cars have (no Bluetooth) - but the car is reliable and has very few problems. I can't recommend this car enough.
Pros
The X-Drive is amazing. All wheel drive will get you out of the deepest snow conditions, and up icy hills! The doors are nice and heavy, and the interior is quiet because of this. The ride is great, and the car has enough power and pickup. It's a great engine, and the car overall doesn't need a lot of maintenance.
Cons
It's missing some features that newer cars have, like Bluetooth and GPS integration. The clip on the moon roof breaks easy, so the shade that covers the moon roof can break easy - especially in the summer when the little clip can get hot. There seems to be a problem with the window regulators, but replacing it once should resolve those issues. It's an older vehicle, so the gas mileage isn't as great as it probably could be.
