1987 BMW 3 Series - God's Chariot
Such an amazing car when you get right down to it. Infinitely tinkerable, multitudes of parts, solid community surrounding the e30 platform. The handling is like most low slung cars in that it feels more like a comfortable go kart than a daily driver. Stuck to the road in most corners and graceful tail slides and recovery when not stuck. Drive train is built like a bullet and with the right modifications will travel as fast as one. Not much in the way of the dizzying array of obfuscated computers and codes to hide any issues that arise in the drivetrain.
Story
Met my future wife while driving it. Not much more to be said there, unless it all go horribly wrong in a future divorce!
Pros
Like I had mentioned before, this is God's Chariot. Best project car I've owned, and just the most durable car I've ever owned. Period. The fact that there is such a robust community surrounding the platform means that there are people who are just as passionate about the car that can help me with any issues I may have when doing my own maintenance on the vehicle. A highly customizable lego set made of metal, 80's plastic, and Glory. Glory is most likely my favorite feature when I think about it.
Cons
The top negatives about the car would be that I don't have another one yet, or even more so I could hand them out like Christmas cards to friends. Realistically, the negatives are those with any car on salty roads, ie rust and the places it accumulates.
1998 BMW 3 Series - handles well, fast
My car is very nice to drive. I have a manual transmission and it really helps to feel connected to the car. The car drives very well and corners great, it really feels like it is secure on the road. The seats are a nice size and fit, they are not so big that the driver slides all around but they are also not so tight to make the driver feel like a giant! The heated seats are great in the Michigan winters and even after 16 years on the road it is still in great working order and very dependable.
Story
I found this car on the internet and took a PTO day off work to drive 500 miles just to look at it in hopes of being able to buy it!
Pros
The great things about this car include it's heated seats as well as it's handling especially it's cornering. I have had an other car with this same size engine that felt as though it had much less power than this one does. I think that having a manual transmission in this car makes the engine feel more powerful.
Cons
Some of the negative aspects of this car include its leather seats and wheel which are very cold to the touch during the winter. The engine also does not seem to run as well in the cold air. One feature that I do not like because of the safety risk it presents is that when the key is placed in the lock it unlocks all four doors at once without any way to unlock only the door that you want to open. Also the down side of any manual transmission car is that it is not compatible with a remote car starter. Finding mechanics who are competent to work on this vehicle has also been a challenge.
