The editorial belly is having trouble digesting the BMW 850i sports coupe. Maybe it's the price. Any car costing $90,000 ought to do everything but make coffee—maybe even that too. When it comes from Germany and wears the blue and white BMW badge on its hood, you expect it to send your blood pressure off the scale with its acceleration and handling, while coddling you as if you were a Saudi oil minister. Mated to a six-speed manual, gearbox (a four-speed automatic is also available), the mighty V-12 catapulted our 850i from standstill like an F-16 being launched off a carrier. Blast-off to 60 mph takes just 6.3 seconds, the quarter-mile dash is over in 14.9 seconds at 96 mph, and the speed doesn't stop coming until an electronic limiter steps in at 156 mph.

It was at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show that BMW presented a car that would become one of its modern classics: the 8 Series Coupe. Built for ten years between ‘89 and ‘99, the car dubbed ‘E31’ was a ‘clean-sheet’ design that could trace its lineage way back to BMW’s rather lovely coupes from the 1930s. And over its lifetime, BMW sold 30,621 8 Series Coupes, with exactly 24 of those hand-built at the Rosslyn plant in South Africa (for tax reasons, assembling the cars there was cheaper than importing them). Cons
This is a bit of an aside, but bear with me. A lot of the time when we borrow a car, we try to kill two birds with one stone by getting our driving time in when we use it for projects. This BMW was planned perfectly, you see. I had to somehow trick video guy Michael Roselli into thinking we were doing something big with a car, and yet also transport a bunch of people and gear so we could shoot that Ferrari video without him knowing. Wow I remember this car so vividly my wife made me sell it because it constantly made people ask questions about it. I had it tuned up with a system loved the tires and it has a great motor.
