This older Audi has been more reliable than any other car I have ever owned. The car already had over 120k miles, but had all the original paperwork and had been previously serviced only at a dealership. It is a 5 speed manual but shifts smoothly and without a single issue. The paint was in great condition when I bought it and is a brilliant emerald green. For being almost 20 years old it still gleans with a lovely sheen. I've been driving this car for over 2 years and the only issue I've had is with the air conditioning compressor which was easily replaced.
Story
This car makes a great beach car. The trunk and interior is large enough to pack anything needed to head over to the beach for the day.
Pros
For a manual 5 speed car, the car shifts flawlessly. I've had many 5 speed cars in the past and at some point the gears always grind a bit while shifting no matter how carefully you drive. The gears on this car have never ever made any noise while shifting and has always clicked right into the next speed. The interior is a lovely leather and the backseat is large and very comfortable. The AC is cold and works incredibly fast. All of the power options work perfectly.
Cons
The overall power of the car is a little lacking. The car shift amazingly well but lacks quick acceleration in the lower speeds. The headlights could be brighter.

My vehicle is a 1997 Audi A4 1.8t (turbo) with Quattro (all-wheel drive). It is silver in color and has black leatherette interior. It is a small-sized (but not compact) vehicle, and I've had it for 12 years. I purchased it with about 70k miles and a broken timing belt (which bent the valves) from someone who was trying to make a cross-country trip and ended up in the middle of nowhere Kentucky. We had the head/valves rebuilt, and the car has been very reliable ever since! I really enjoy driving this car. It handles very well, and it sticks to the road in wet conditions. Being Quattro (AWD), it also does very well in the snow -- one of my husband's favorite pastimes is taking it out in an empty parking lot and doing donuts to "test" the AWD, but really, I think he just likes to play in... Story
While I was working at a store in our local mall, I had to go in right after a big snow storm. The mall took the notion of "snow removal" very lightly because instead of actually removing the snow, they just pushed it in to very large piles taking up much of the employee parking. With it being during the holiday season, parking was already scarce to begin with, and I did not want to be late to... (more)
Pros
It is an extremely safe car. My husband, myself, and my three children were all in the car at the time of the accident, and we were able to walk away. The car absorbed the impact very well and actually ricocheted the other car back into a telephone pole. I am very pleased with how well it held up in the accident, and I feel lucky that we were in that car at the time. I also really like the quality of this car. It does not feel "plastic-y" like a lot of American or Japanese cars. When I ride in this car, I know I am in a well-built vehicle. The seats are comfortable and have held up extreme... (more)
Cons
The negatives would be that the timing belt failed in the first place at such low mileage (even though that's what allowed us to purchase it at such a good price). The sunroof also has never worked, apparently there is an issue with the guides, and it seems to be a common problem with the A4s. Our faulty sunroof has fortunately never caused a leak, but we have seen several that have not been so lucky. Also, these cars are unfortunately undervalued, because they are considered more of an "entry level" car for this brand. This is a major con if you are in an accident, even when you were not ...
