Audi's A3 is a compelling entry-level luxury car, but it lacks some expected features for its price, and the interior, although well-made, feels austere.
Pros
It's solid and quiet and has a drum-tight body structure. Crisp handling and a firm, controlled ride make the A3 enjoyable to drive. We tested it with the now-discontinued 1.8-liter engine, which delivered a respectable 27 mpg in our tests. The cabin is quiet, and the front seats are comfortable and supportive. The rear seat, however, is tight. It takes a bit of time to get used to the MMI infotainment system, but it ultimately proves to be logical.

For a smaller car and what I use as a commuter, the Audi A3 provides an excellent combination of fun and functionality. I average over 30 mpg in the city, and on a recent road trip across the desert, I got 40 mpg one way and 38 mpg on the return trip. More importantly though, is that it isn't an econo car. The turbo-charged engine and dual-clutch transmission gives this car plenty of power. The stiff suspension and low-profile tires (if that's the kind of thing you like) lets you throw the car around with plenty of confidence. It's a great-looking car that drives well.

I left the giant sunroof open one afternoon and found a butterfly in my car when I returned.
Pros
This is the second Audi A3 (8V) that I've owned. My wife got into a major accident in my first one and walked away without a scratch; hence, when it came time to get a replacement, I got the exact same model. It may be somewhat small, but it's built well and I feel completely safe in it. The excellent gas mileage (+30 mpg city) and fun factor of driving brings back some joy to my commute. Standard Xenon headlights are really nice if your night vision isn't the greatest.
Cons
The trunk and back seat are small and the air conditioning. On a hot summer day it is just okay. I don't mind the stiffer suspension, but some members of the family might. Perhaps one of the biggest complaints I have is the sacrifice in rear visibility and window openings to create the low-profile and sporty design. If you ever have to hang out the window at the ATM or drive through, it's going to be tight regardless of your size. The dual-clutch operation does take a split second longer to engage when changing from reverse to drive, but you get used to it.
